I was listening to "Honey, Honey" on an import CD on headphones and noticed at 2:41 there seems to be an unusual sudden shift in the stereo spectrum. It's kind of hard to describe, but (as one example, among other things) the drum kit seems to shirt more left. I'm not sure if this is an alternate mix, or if it was always this way and I never really noticed before. Can anyone else who has this song on CD check and see if they notice this, too?

It's that way on the original 45 as well:

1974_183 - ABBA - Honey, Honey - (45)

It sounds like the left and right channels suddenly get swapped. Maybe some later CD re-releases fixed this mistake.

Can anyone pinpoint at what word the shift happens?

Thanks!

Andy

It happens halfway between the lines "nearly kill me, ah-hah, honey, honey" and "I heard about you before", a few seconds before the fade begins.

Andy, I checked a lot of versions on Spotify as well as the 45 link on Youtube that Kevin (VWestlife) provided.

On most versions it happens at 2:39 (not 2:41 as I previously stated), on beat 2 on the instrumental measure between the 2 vocal lines.

On the 45, it's there, too (on beat 2) but it's a little "smoother", like you can hear the strings shift from the right channel to the left channel very noticeably, but there's something about the "stereo shift" that sounds a little different there than the CDs I heard. The fact that the 45 has it suggests that the master tape has it.

But here's where things get interesting. On some of the recordings on Spotify, I don't think I heard it at all. This could suggest a difference between 45 version and album version (albeit an unintentional one, I'd say) or a difference between US & European versions. I'm not sure at this point what's going on. I'll summarize my observations of which CDs have which versions a little later today. But this still likely won't indicate exactly what's happening (45 vs. LP - or US vs. Europe - or the stereo glitch was fixed somewhere along the way for some CDs.) It will be interesting to see what others who have various versions make of all this.
