I believe that is debatable, since TM Century issued only the album version on their CHR HitDisc and GoldDisc. Our station always played the cut from TM's CDs, so we never played the "Freeze Mix" at all. I'm wondering if AT40 also played the album version, since they used TM's discs for many of the songs on the countdown. (TM did issue the "Freeze Mix," but is was only on their "B" HitDisc, which contained Urban and Rock formats.)

I could be mistaken, but I thought I remembered some of the vocal hooks from the "Freeze Mix" from hearing it on the radio - I lived in Minneapolis back in '91, and I would have heard it on KDWB back then. I think I have the Rick Dees year-end countdown from 1991, so I'll check tonight to see what he played.

Funny to me that even though this was a big, big hit, there's not much to latch onto, musically. The vocal parts for the first half of the song are totally different for the two mixes we're discussing, but I can't remember which was the one I heard back then. This stands in pretty stark contrast to, say, "Magic Carpet Ride" or "Soul Man", where the pronunciation of one word easily tips off which vocal take we're hearing.

I too remember hearing the "Come inside take off your coat" lyrics on KDWB, although I always thought I was hearing the "Smoothed Out Mix" as it begins the same way (I have it on promo CD single). What are the differences between the "Freeze" and "Smoothed Out" mixes? I'm almost certain that the "Smoothed Out Mix" is not the same as the LP version after the 2:16 mark, so they must at least be different edits.

Incidentally, I have a Rick Dees from the summer of '91 and they use the LP version on that particular show.

Well, I stand corrected! The 1991 year-end Rick Dees countdown uses the LP version as well.

Pat:

Thought I'd make you aware that the notes in the database for "I Wanna Sex You Up" currently states:

(the cassette single contains the)

The complete comment should read: "the cassette single contains the "Freeze Mix" and runs 4:06." I know when the database was converted from the old hard copy book to the electronic format, the system had some issues printing text that proceeded quotation marks.

In doing some research, it appears that three promo CDs were issued for this song:

PRO-CD-4720
1. Freeze Mix (4:07)
2. Album Version (4:05)

PRO-CD-4728
1. Smoothed Out Mix (3:38)
2. Master Mix (4:05)
3. Smoothed Out Mix/Long Version (5:13)

PRO-CD-4916
1. I Wanna Sex You Up (Love You Up Mix) (3:55)
2. I Wanna Sex You Up (Soft Mix) (3:59)
3. I Wanna Sex You Up (Xtended Mix) (4:23)
4. I Wanna Sex You Up (Power Mix w/ Rap) (4:23)
5. I Wanna Sex You Up (Power Mix w/o Rap) (4:23)

I'm 99% certain that the "Album Version" and "Master Mix" are the same, matching the New Jack City soundtrack. I'm going to dig out my commercial CD single and check it against the soundtrack version.

In case it was never officially detemined, the "Master Mix" from my CD single is the same as the soundtrack album version.

Regarding Color Me Badd's "I Wanna Sex You Up", can anyone verify if any of the database CDs where the song runs 4:22 and contains a "remixed" comment is actually one of the radio mixes appearing on the various promo CD singles? I notice there are several radio mixes that run 4:23.

Revisiting this because I owned PRO-CD-4916 at one
time... I bought it from a used record store on Cape
Cod in the mid-90s on a hunch that it might contain
the version of this song that Kiss 108 played in
Boston. Sure enough, it does - the Xtended Mix (cut
3) is the one I remember hearing most. It runs 4:22
as indicated and has the "Hey Beautiful Lady" first
verse from the album version, with a backbeat
throughout the song that's similar to the "Walk This
Way" style beat used on the US single version of
Roxette's Joyride. It also starts with a drum intro
in the first measure... kick-snare-snare-snare-snare-
snare-erans-snare (the "erans" being the snare sound
reversed. It's a great version of the song, and it's
been my go-to ever since.

Interestingly, the lyrics for "I Wanna Sex U Up" included
with the CMB CD do not match the lyrics of the version
actually included on the album itself.

There's another remix denoted as the Howie Tee Remix on
their follow up album, "Young, Gifted and Badd" which also
features the 'hey, beautiful lady...' vocals.
