Thought I'd start a new thread instead of threadjacking the "Indiana Wants Me" thread. I have a couple of CDs with "If I Were Your Woman" by Gladys Knight & The Pips on them (one in mono and one in stereo). On both CDs, I'm hearing a little blemish around the (1:39) mark (a little pop, if you will)--it's less noticeable on the mono version but very noticeable on the stereo version. I'm doubting that was on the original vinyl (but hey, you never know). But I might as well ask to Indy (or whenever Jim receives his set)--does that same blemish occur on the version in the 1970 singles box set?

I've never noticed that before, but it is still audible on the Vol 10 set if you're listening for it.
Theories? |

Wish I did. I've never really understood the mastering process. I do know that little blips will happen--I've also heard a pop on Buffalo Springfield's "For What It's Worth" (at (1:47)) and I believe there's one on Sly & The Family Stone's "Everyday People" (at around (1:41)). As to why--I'm not sure.

Surprised to hear that (but then again I don't collect vinyl). I would have never thought a commercial release would have that blemish on it (wonder if promo versions had the same blemish). |

Doug, from your initial description of "a little pop," I was primed to listen carefully for it. But that proved to be unnecessary, because it really stood out. My 45 is a Columbia Santa Maria pressing, so the vinyl quality is tops. The mastering is of the typical Motown variety.
If the mono stock 45 and several CDs, including the new Motown box all have this pop, I doubt that the promo 45s would be any different; the pop must be on the master tape. Their only recourse back then would have been to splice it out, but for whatever reason, it has apparently been there all along. Edited by Yah Shure |

Good point, Yah (sounds funny to address someone by their handle :) ). I didn't start listening to radio until 1972 and this song was a hit in early 1971, so I have no recollection as to how it sounded on radio back in the day (of course, back then, music was principally on AM, and fidelity wasn't AM's strong suit).
The funny thing is I believe I've heard the song on oldies stations of recent, but without the blemish. Could certainly be wrong (wouldn't be the first time). |

My copy is from 100% Motown - The 70's and the 'pop' that's been described, to me, sounds like more of a bass drum kick.
