I was wondering if anyone has done an analysis of the tracks on the "Dance Classics: The Hits" series that was put out by Unidisc in the early nineties. I guess they are condsidered imports (from Canada) so they are not included in the database.

For those of you who don't know about it, this series has 16 Volumes and included mostly 12" Single versions of many Club, Pop and Dance records of the 70's and 80's.

I'm trying to find out which songs are the true 12" Single versions, LP versions, etc. I can type out all 16 volumes with the times if that would be helpful.

Thanks.

I have volumes: 3, 5, 7, 11, and 12, and would be happy to answer any questions about those issues.

That would be great. I have all 16 and I am trying to determine the versions that are on the CDs. I will do 2 discs at a time to make it less complicated?

Are the following tracks the 12" Single version, LP version or neither?

Volume 3
Somebody Else's Guy - Jocelyn Brown (6:17)
Last Night A DJ Saved My Life - Indeep (5:38)
Funkytown - Lipps Inc. (7:46)
Venus - Bananarama (7:25)
Pump Up The Jam - Technotronic (5:04)
It's My Life - Talk Talk (6:12)

Volume 5
Ain't Nothing Going On But The Rent - Gwen Guthrie (5:57)
Dance (Disco Heat) - Sylvester 5:46
Keep The Fire Burnin - Gwen McRae 5:37
White Lines (Don't Do It) - Grandmaster Flash & Melle Mell (7:28)

Let's start with these two. Whatever info you can give me would be great.

Thanks

Well, I'm not as anal as most on this forum (to me the difference between 3:28 and 3:30 isn't significant), but here's my review on the discs you've listed, so far:

Volume 3

Somebody Else's Guy - Jocelyn Brown (6:17) - this is a remix by Dutch D.J. Ben Liebrand, which is different from any U.S. pressing. I have the original 12" mix on a Unidisc cd single

Last Night A DJ Saved My Life - Indeep (5:38) - LP version

Funkytown - Lipps Inc. (7:46) - LP version (which is also the promotional only 12" version)

Venus - Bananarama (7:25) - this version is a remix that may have been one of the alternate 12" mixes, but not the "main" long mix. I can investigate further, if you'd like, or recommend a cd that has the original 12" mix on cd.

Pump Up The Jam - Technotronic (5:04) - LP mix

It's My Life - Talk Talk (6:12) - 12" mix

Volume 5

Ain't Nothing Going On But The Rent - Gwen Guthrie (5:57) - 12" mix

Dance (Disco Heat) - Sylvester 5:46 - LP mix, I think

Keep The Fire Burnin - Gwen McRae 5:37 - LP mix, I think

White Lines (Don't Do It) - Grandmaster Flash & Melle Mel (7:28) - 12" mix
