Thanks to Bill Cahill, I just obtained a vinyl 45 of "Hard To Say I'm Sorry" by AZ Yet (LaFace 24223). Joel Whitburn lists this as being by AZ Yet with Peter Cetera and the flip side being "David Foster remix". My 45 does not say "with Peter Cetera" nor does it have a remix on the flip side. My flip side is "Last Night".   I also have the cd single of this song and it does say "featuring Peter Cetera" with track 2 being the "David Foster remix". Just checking to see if there were two different vinyl 45's of this song.

Pat, the information you quoted from the book pertains to the cassette single. There was only one pressing of the vinyl 45 and it's just as you state.

I am missing a Peter Cetera here somewhere. The cassette single and cd single both credit Peter Cetera while the full cd does not and the vinyl single does not, yet all the versions sound the same to me. The cassette single and cd single even say "LP version". Is Cetera really on the vinyl single and full cd, just uncredited? I may need a database corection here.

My copy of this song is from RPM's Top Hits U.S.A. It is labeled as: Az Yet feat. Peter Cetera - Hard To Say I'm Sorry (David Foster's Remix). Peter Cetera appears from 2:36-2:48.

The LP version, vinyl 45 version, and first track on both the CD single and the cassette single are the same version on which Peter Cetera does not appear. Cetera appears only on 'David Foster's Remix' which is the second track on the CD single and cassette single but which does not appear on the full length CD or vinyl 45 at all. The cover of the CD single and cassette single both state 'Featuring Peter Cetera' but this refers to only the second track on each. During its entire 34 week run on the Hot 100, however, the song was credited to 'Az Yet Featuring Peter Cetera'. When more than one version of a song was receiving airplay, Billboard's policy at the time was to list the version receiving the most airplay. (Its current policy is to ask the record label how it wants the song listed.) So it would appear from how Billboard listed the song that 'David Foster's Remix' (the version featuring Peter Cetera) has the most legitimate claim to being considered the 'hit' version.

The David Foster Remix was the only version our station played. I don't remember if we used the promo CD or if we played it from a Chartbreakers radio compilation disc. Was the remix the lead track on the promo CD, perhaps?

Finally able to access my deeply-buried 1997 promo CD singles. The Peter Cetera version was the only version we ever played at our station as well, Aaron. In addition to the commercial CD single that Paul C references above (LaFace 73008-24223-2), containing 2 tracks: 1-Album Version (listed & actual 3:14); 2-Peter Cetera Remix (listed 3:17; actual 3:16), we received two different promo CD singles for this:

Az Yet-"Hard To Say I'm Sorry" (LFPCD-4223)
1-Album Version (listed & actual 3:14)

Shortly afterwards, we received in the second, "Remix" promo CD single, from which we played track 1 of this 6-track promo. Here are the particulars:

Az Yet-"Hard To Say I'm Sorry" (REMIX) (LFPCD-4238)
1-David Foster's Remix Featuring Peter Cetera (listed 3:17; actual 3:16)
2-Album Version (listed & actual 3:14)
3-Chase Remix (Radio Edit) (listed 3:33; actual 3:32)
4-David Foster's Remix w/o Peter Cetera (listed 3:17; actual 3:16)
5-Chase Extended Mix (listed & actual 5:12)
6-Acappella (listed & actual 3:14)

The database correctly notes that the Hits of 1997 various artists CD (Sony BMG Music Entertainment Custom Marketing Group 40755) contains Az Yet's version of "Hard to Say I'm Sorry" without Peter Cetera. However, the CD jacket erroneously states: "Az Yet featuring Peter Cetera" on the track listing. Pat, you might want to alert database subscribers of this incorrect info.
