Are we counting medleys like The Spinners' "Cupid / I've Loved You For A Long Time" and "Working My Way Back To You / Forgive Me Girl?" Both are from 1980's year-end Billboard pop charts.

Both of those Spinners medleys were basically a remake of a well-known hit (Four Seasons, Sam Cooke), with an added bridge written by producer Michael Zager. As a result, Zager ended up in the writing credits and got songwriter royalties for both hits.
Even then, it was an obvious scheme to collect royalty payments. The first pressings of the "Working" 45 didn't even list "Forgive Me Girl". The Spinners anthologies include both of those songs. Two-song medleys don't drive up the costs significantly. |
