Abagon was very kind to pass along that the actual commercial 45 run time of Rick Astley's "It Would Take a Strong Strong Man" is 3:14, not 3:19 as stated on the record label.

OOPS! Abagon has brought to my attention that I reported the above run time info for the wrong Rick Astley song. My post should have instead read that the actual commercial 45 run time of "She Wants to Dance with Me" is 3:14, not 3:19 as stated on the record label. The database will need to be revised accordingly. My apologies for the mix-up.

Just found the 2008 Playlist CD, sealed, for $1.
Nice! A very well-chosen collection, with six songs from Whenever You Need Somebody, a non-LP UK B-side from that era that charted over there ("My Arms Keep Missing You"), five songs from Hold Me In Your Arms, and then "Cry For Help" and "Hopelessly". It's all the Astley you need, including all the hits. Sound quality is quite nice. It's just a teeny bit more compressed than the full Whenever You Need Somebody CD, but it's not brickwalled/maximized at all. EQ is very nice. No NR, either. It's got asterisks denoting a "single version" by "Whenever You Need Somebody", "Together Forever" (yay!), "She Wants To Dance With Me", "Giving Up On Love", "Hold Me In Your Arms" and "Cry For Help". I can't hear any difference between the Playlist version of "She Wants To Dance With Me" and the versions on Quality Canada's This Is Music 6 (1989), PolyTel Canada's Turn It Up (1989), and A List Disc 48 (1994). Is there really a single version, or is everything the LP version, like I'd thought? |

All current db CDs contain the 45/LP version of this song.

I purchased Rick Astley's "Hold Me In Your Arms" at my local thrift store today, and noticed the serial for mine is 8589-2-R.
I don't know what the -2-R is all about; does anybody know if this a modified release in any way, or just a second run of the original CD? The audio seems pristine, completely unclipped and dynamic, if a little bright. |

I have the LP for this release, and while it's a fairly standard pressing, it sounds tight, impactful and clean.
Too bad they weren't singles, but "Take Me To your Heart" and "Till Then (Time Stands Still)" are great sounding tracks. |

The "2" is the format code; in this case, CD. Over the years, the U.S. record labels developed a (nearly) universal code system for the music formats: "1" = vinyl LP "2" = CD "4" = cassette "8" = 8-track Prior to 1983, some labels, such as Warner Bros., Elektra/Asylum, Casablanca, etc., used "5" as their cassette code instead. A few other labels had different systems (for all formats)... The "R" represents the record label in the BMG family; in this case, the parent, RCA ("J" = Jive, etc.)... So, if Astley had been signed to Jive instead of RCA in 1988, and you were holding the 8-track instead of the CD of Hold Me in Your Arms, the full catalog no. would've been "8589-8-J" (not that they did issue it on 8-track, BTW - they didn't)... :-) RCA 8589 is the only version of Hold Me in Your Arms to be issued on CD here in the U.S. to date; note that Pat has always omitted format & label prefixes/suffixes in the catalog nos. from his db listings (which I think is a good system)... If you're worried about a possible "modified release", you'll want to look for an "RE" code in the matrix no. that is printed around the inner ring of the CD itself, which would indicate a change (or two) was made somewhere. I'm not currently aware of any such alterations to Hold Me in Your Arms, though... |
