my commercial 45 for the wilson pickett song 'hey jude'
issued a atlantic 2591 lists the run time on the label as 4:02 and does indeed run that length....you'll need to fade the 4:05 'man and a half' cd version for 0:03 from 3:59 to 4:02 to effectively re-create the true vinyl 45 version...the db contains a range of run time of 4:02 to 4:05 |

I have just acquired an Atlantic 2591 promo 45 with long and short "Hey
Jude" versions included. The "long version" is identical to the stock 45 version length, with both listed and actual times of (4:02). Deadwax info for this side of my promo 45 is A - 15760 - 1". The "short version" side of my promo 45 has both a listed and actual time of (3:05), and features deadwax info of "A - 15762 - 1". |

Is there an edit or just an early fade? |

Hykker quote:
Is there an edit or just an early fade? As a 100% total non-editor, I suppose I will continue to cringe until the day I die whenever that inevitable follow-up is asked, whenever I learn of/locate/report on a before-unknown Top 40 hit with long/short promo 45 versions. I will always feel unable to properly respond. My best answering option, as it has for 10+ years now, continues to be shoot out dubs of both versions to the asker, for them to assess. So Steve, keep an eye on your inbox. My highly-unofficial sneak preview does reveal an edit, however. I can't provide accurate timings, but to me the versions sound identical until after Pickett's third "Hey Jude" verse sing-through, which begins at around (1:25). Then, both the "so let it out" verse (begins at around 1:50) and the 4th "Hey Jude" sing-through (begins at around 2:22) are removed entirely on the short version. At around (2:48) of the long version, Pickett loudly screams (no surprise there!) That basically serves as his transitional element to leave the song's early verses, and start the end chorus. Once the above edits are applied, this scream will now appear at about the (1:50) mark of the short version. As a late reference point, a brief, Mark Knopfler-like/Sultans Of Swing guitar riff appears at around the (3:28) mark on the long v, but is now at around the (2:32) mark on the short v. The last vocal element I can reference is 3 Pickett sings of "gotta". These are at around (3:51) on the long v, and at around (2:56) on the short v. Hopefully Steve can provide more precise version difference particulars, after analyzing the promo 45 dubs I just sent out to him. Edited by jimct |

OK, I'm not as good at analyzing these edits as some
people here, but comparing the two in the multitrack editor of Adobe Audition, it looks like everything from 1:49:391 to 2:45:993 is edited out. There do not appear to be any other edits, nor is the short version faded early. |
