Other than saying "to date, no compact disc release includes the original 45 version", the database doesn't explain any of this. Can it be updated?
I would say the database needs to distinguish between the "original 78 version", the "original 45 version", and the "reissue 45 version", the latter being what is on most CDs. The45Prof explains the situation very well in his post of the original 78 version. To summarize: • At 1:03, the original 78 has "But all of those vows we made", clear as a bell. • At 1:45, the original 78 has "But all of those vows you made", with a slight warble on "made". It is unclear if this warble is a tape problem or just how he sang it, but this is not the glitch we're talking about in this thread. • Due to subsequent damage to the master tape, at 1:03, the original 45 has "But all of those vows we made" with severe drag/wow on "made". It sounds horrible. This is the glitch. • Circa 1960, the master tape was "repaired" by replacing a 2-bar section (about :05) at 1:03 with the equivalent section from 1:45 (starting on the "2" beat). This master was used for (nearly?) all subsequent reissues on 45, LP and CD. In other words, on reissues, at 1:03 these 45s have "But all of those vows you made", including the relatively minor warble on "made", identical to how it sounds later in the song.
