The "Standards and Rarities" CD David refers to is on the UK Sepia label, which is a "gray-area" reissue label that uses shellac or vinyl for all its sources. So anything on the Sepia label is going to be taken from vinyl. Edited by Brian W. - 16 April 2025 at 9:31am |

It's my understanding that the Acrobat label releases recordings in the U.K.'s public domain and, therefore, the quality varies wildly from title to title. That said, I should point out that I recently picked up a surprisingly good Ames Brothers 2-CD set on Acrobat ADDCD3181 called Hits Collection 1948-60. This compilation contains 54 tracks, including every single Billboard Hot 100 and Cashbox chart entry spanning the group's entire career. Though many of the tracks are dubbed from vinyl 45s and 78s, the sound quality ranges from respectable to decent overall, but not great, and are presented in their original mono mixes. Meanwhile, the packaging, artwork, and graphic design is impressively vibrant and colorful, while the CD booklet contains 15 pages of detailed liner notes. Everything on this release appears to be pretty well-researched. One of the big downsides, unfortunately, is that the discs consist of CD-Rs, not factory silver-pressed commercial CDs. I should also note that this is the only Acrobat title I currently own, and that I've heard less than stellar reviews regarding other releases from this label. So, proceed with caution if you buy anything from Acrobat as your mileage will likely vary. Edited by Todd Ireland - 18 April 2025 at 3:28am |

The only US CD to have the track, The Best of Como 20 Songs has it in stereo, my CD finally came. Happy to report Aaron's rip sounds better from the Rarities set.

That’s unfortunate. The rip I sent is definitely from vinyl, although the sound isn’t bad. You’re saying the Sony set is not good sounding?

Aaron, you sent a rip from the Rarities set? Did I miss that, or did you send directly to Rich? I expect it's the same version that I have.

David,
You said you had an emergency that is why I didn't send it to you. I can send you both when you return. |

Aaron,
I wasn't impressed with it. The Rarities sounded better overall. Bill C had a look and did his best to match the mono 45 mp3 the 45 prof gave. The Stereo folded down isn't an exact match to the 45 mix. Edited by PopArchivist - 21 April 2025 at 6:06pm |

The version from Sony "Best of Perry Como" is from tape, but it does have wonky EQ. It sounds better if you add some high end. |

Rich sent over the Sony CD source, and to my ears it's significantly better than the UK vinyl dub. I hear a lot of noise reduction on the UK CD that's not on the Sony disc, and like Brian said, Sony's source is from tape.
