The actual commercial 45 run time of Men at Work's "Down Under" is 3:40. (Run time info courtesy once again of our good friend abagon. The stated time on the record label is 3:41.) The only reason I post this info is because database CD appearances of this song run from 3:35-3:43.

The 12" extended mix is available on "Pure... 80's remixes." A four CD set
from Sony music. Wikipedia lists the first appearance of this mix as occurring in 1986. Anyone hear this back in 82/83? |

Ugh - the 12" mix is awful. I first found it on the
Australian Men At Work collection '81-'85, which was released in 1986. I highly doubt that it was released when the song was a hit; I've never seen any '82/'83 releases anywhere having that 12" mix. |

There's a lot of crap on the radio, but there's only one Crap From The Past.

Our station got excellent promo 12" single service from Columbia in late
1982, and we never got one in for "Down Under" when it was a current. |

Thanks for the info. I was in college in Western Oklahoma in 1983 so I wasn't
hearing the special promos playing on KROQ or in the dance clubs of NYC. |

As far as I know, the non-extended version is the same everywhere. The end of the song has a lot of repetition and vocal ad-libs, and a very long, gentle fade, starting at about 3:10 and continuing until a hair past 3:41. I doubt any commercial radio station ever played the whole thing!
On CD, it is often mastered with a fair amount of silence on each end, so you will see reported durations from 3:42 to 3:46. On occasion, it will be faded early, like at 3:35. As mastered on the circa 1984 Business As Usual CD (CK 37978) and the 1989 mini CD single Who Can It Be Now? / Down Under (13K 68654), the song runs about 3:41 on the nose. On the Like, Omigod! The '80s Pop Culture Box (Totally) box, it reaches zero about a quarter of a second sooner, but it's otherwise the same. So I am wondering about the 3:40 duration reported for the 45. I assume it's slightly fast or just a very slightly early fade. I'm curious to know exactly which, though. Edited by mjb50 |
