Presumably due to limited availability as a single in the U.S., "Pretty Fly (For A
White Guy)" only peaked at #53 on the Hot 100. It did much better in CHR/Top 40 airplay, though, making it to #19 (Radio & Records). The album version is the indisputable official 45/LP version, as it was issued as the A- side of a 7" single in the US. (I'm not sure if a cassette single was issued here or not.) My question, though, is which version you recall hearing most often on top 40 radio. The station I worked for at the time alternated between the album version and the "Baka Boyz Low Rider Remix." We received the latter version on a CD-R promo from Columbia, and I've never seen a factory-pressed US promo with this remix. Some import CD singles, however, do contain this mix. |

I just checked my promo of this and it's also just the album
version, which is what we played where I worked at the time. |

In the Tampa, FL area, I remember most of the Top 40
stations playing the Low Rider remix. Album Rock stuck to the regular LP version...from my recollection. |

In Philly, I heard this song on at three stations, Y100 the modern rock station,
Q102 the Top 40/Rhythmic station, and Max 95.7 the Modern AC. All three played the LP version. However, when Y100 would broadcast from the late Philly club Maui on Saturday nights, they would play the "Low Rider Remix". |

Thanks for your recollections, gentlemen! It looks like there was a pretty even split between the remix and the LP version on top 40 radio, depending the market and daypart.

The single was not released commercially. I believe the single charted lower because it peaked before the Hot 100 changed its rules to allow non-singles. The song had already peaked
by the time it was allowed to chart on The Hot 100. Starting in the early 1990s, in order to chart on The Hot 100, a single needed to be available in any commercial single configuration other than a vinyl single (aka 7"). This is the reason why "Something In Common" was ineligible to chart. Edited by Loveland |

Loveland is correct, the single was available commercially(I used to look for it).
What was made available was a sound-alike version by a group called The Obscure(Which I did see in stores, and certainly confused this 10 year old), however nobody bought so it didn't chart. Edited by radiofan16 |

Ah, so the 7" was not eligible to chart either. Good to know.

The "Obscure" version did make #68 on the singles
sales chart for what it's worth (which is not much really). |
