Ed,
my copy of the Rhino best-of contains the hit version, so Pat may need to re-check his, or there may be more than one pressing. Now, the alternate version is actually a re-recording they did when they moved to DCP, which was United Artists. It's one of the closest re-cuts i've ever heard, so it actually does sound like an alternate take from the same session. So close in fact you have to go to the last verse to hear some of the differences in inflections on some words, or how he ends phrases. In the line "now you start to arch your back" in the alternate version, he sings that line similar to the others, but in the original End version he sort of shouts that line with all the words as high notes. Anyways, the alternate version should only appear on any of the EMI / CEMA collections that use the United Artists/DCP masters. Then of course they had to confuse matters further in the 60's, by re-cutting or using alternate takes for a few of the DCP hits, for the stereo LP's. Very hard to get all the 45 versions in one place. Hope that helps! MM |

The Rhino stereo mix is a different take and, to my ears, it sounds like an earlier one. The mono mix is a marvelous performance by Anthony, he's much more into the music in the hit take. The music tracks sound the same, but the vocal is better in the mono mix. GM |

i just A/B'ed the vinyl mono 45 issued as end 1060 versus
the version on the rhino best of cd issued as 70919 and they sound the same to me, except for the mono, stereo differences....the vinyl 45 states a run time on the label as 2:07 and does indeed run that length.....pat where did you come up with the note below as the song doesn't run 2:11 to contain any of your differences..... LITTLE ANTHONY and THE IMPERIALS 1964 GOIN' OUT OF MY HEAD. since every version of this on CD is the stereo LP version, the question begs to be asked: what's the diff between LP and 45 version? __________________ dc1 Back to Top Pat Downey Admin Group Joined: 01 October 2003 Online Status: Offline Posts: 1318 Posted: 01 March 2006 at 9:14pm | IP Logged The 45 and mono LP version of "Goin' Out Of My Head" are a different vocal take than the stereo LP. The stereo LP version also has "ooh" at 2:11 while the 45 version does not. |

Ed, the info you quoted from the other thread concerns the (2:11) "Goin' Out Of My Head" and not the (2:07) "Shimmy, Shimmy, Ko-Ko-Bop." |

Ok,
RE: Shimmy Shimmy Ko-Ko Bop (only) I had to do some further testing because i have a history with the song. And, no not just me as a kid singing "Gimme Gimme Coco-Puffs! Gimme Gimme Puffs!" to the tune.... :-) It was that i first owned a vinyl Best-Of on United Artists, and was fooled by the alternate version of this song. (on the same record, the re-record of "Tears On My Pillow" was quite easy to tell was not the original.) Well eventually a friend heard it on one of my tapes in the car and told me it was not the right one. So i took one of my Roulette V/A comps with the hit version in mono, and did a A/B comparison. THAT was when i got to know the hit version quite well. So as soon as i got the Rhino Best-Of i could hear it contains the correct hit version. (At least mine does!) Now, on the Rhino disc it is stereo and they left it 50's style, wide 2-track stereo. His lead is hard left, and the backing track is hard-right. On some later CD's, Rhino and other labels narrowed the channels. So for example on the Doo-Wop box, it is much narrower, but the same hit version. To verify these things, i simply do a 2-channel synch. It may seem like a lot of work but i use software that makes these things quite easy. I have to do synch-checks all the time for projects. I doubt anyone needs it, but if one wants here is the demo mp3 file for the mono 45 synched with the Rhino Best of. To do this, the Rhino copy is first folded to mono, then placed in the left channel. The mono 45 is playing in the right channel. Thank you Ed for providing the 45 dub for this: http://www.4shared.com/mp3/CphOkfW8/Little_Anthony_- _Shimmy_Shimmy.html As a side note, when the stereo is folded to mono, to my ears it is pretty much identical to the mono 45, even in reverb. It's common to hear small differences, but in this case i didn't. Hope this helps! MM |

Gary, can you please point out a place or two where the Rhino Best Of take sounds noticeably different to you. I've been comparing the takes on my End 45, the Rhino Best Of CD, and the Rhino Doo Wop Box, and they all sound like the same take to me. It is possible that at some point this CD was remastered. In his review in A Guide To Oldies On Compact Disc, Mike Callahan states that the version on the Rhino Best Of CD is "not exactly the same vocal take", but he also says that the song listed as track 5 on the jacket is actually track 3 "with the others being pushed down a number". This is not the case with my copy. My copy states that track 3 is "So Much", track 4 is "The Diary", and track 5 is "It's Not For Me", and these do actually play as tracks 3, 4, and 5. |

I can't point out any differences because there are none. Thanks for asking me to check and please accept my apology for confusing or misleading anyone. I, too, misread the earlier post about an alternate version and, having very recently done a needle drop of Shimmy from a Roulette V/A LP after comparing it to the Rhino Best of CD, I was "remembering" Anthony's vocal sounding different. The Rhino Best CD - I have the same one you do - has a poor, no punch mix of Shimmy. The mix on the Rhino Doo Wop box is much better, except the extremely bright top end makes my ears hurt (and they're nearing retirement). I should add that my disc dub runs 2:07, whereas the Rhinos run 2:12 and 2:11 respectively. GM Edited by Gary Mack |
