Regina's album doesn't appear on Qobuz or iTunes (US). I wonder if in 2026 someone will reissue the album for it's 40th anniversary. This one hit wonder vanished all these years later.

As was noted upthread, the artist, who apparently owns the rights to the song has no interest or desire in making this song available. I suppose if
it's PD in some corner of the world someone could reissue it, but given it's a relatively forgotten song by a one-hit wonder the chance of that
happening is slim.

If it never made a comp in 39 years, it isn't likely to make anything with the CD declining in popularity. Hykker is right even the 40th anniversary isn't going to generate an expanded edition or reissue. It remains one of the few top 10 hits of the 80's unavailable digitally. It is a shame.
Favorite two expressions to live by on this board: "You can't download vinyl" and "Not everything is available on CD."

Hi there—
I’m really curious as to who you were in contact with about licensing the song. I ask because I actually work for Regina and have since 2018, and can confirm we have never spoken. I can also confirm Regina does not currently own the rights to her original recording, nor would she object to its inclusion on any compilation, etc. If what you say is true, we would not be releasing a re-recording of the track next week. She is not at all ashamed to have recorded “Baby Love”. I just wanted to clear the air about this. I don’t like seeing false information out there regarding this matter.

Hi Ray, welcome to the forum! The post you're referencing from 2020 is from Mark Mathews, who sadly passed away a couple years ago. He worked for Eric Records, a company that has released several various artist CD compilations. Thanks for clearing up any misinformation about Regina's feelings toward the song.

What's the story behind the re-recording?

Oh wow, I’m sorry to hear of his passing. The misinformation from his post has followed me for a few years now; I’ve seen others cite it in groups on Facebook and elsewhere, not knowing where it came from. I just wonder who he spoke with about the song because I know it wasn’t me or Regina. I guess I may never know, but I hope people will now see the truth.

Regina and Stephen Bray reunited a few years ago and have been working to release some songs that never saw the light of day in the 1980s. And with “Baby Love”s unavailability, it seemed like a no brainer to re-record it. Paul Pesco and David Sanborn also return on the track. Stephen and his long time collaborator Michael Verdick meticulously recreated the track to match the original. And of course, we hope to make the original version available, too; as well as the 12” version, dub… you name it. Regina actually recorded an entire second album of material that was not released and we hope to put that out as well, along with dozens and dozens of demos from her Red Hot days all the way through to Baby Love and beyond. But I hope those of you interested will check out “Baby Love (Regina’s Version)” when it’s out.

That's all really great info! I'm glad to hear you're working on getting all of this material released.

As for the person Mark might have spoken with, it likely would have been someone at Atlantic in their licensing department. My understanding is that a reissue label rarely, if ever, reaches out directly to the artist or management. Those requests would be directed to the company who owns the master recordings, and then if the artist is required to provide permission (per whatever contractual agreements are in place) the label rep would reach out to the artist.
