Kenny G's saxophone performance starts at :07 on the short 45 also on my Greatest Hits CD, meanwhile it starts at :14 on the long 45. The short 45 is not just an early fade of the LP. So I feel that short 45 version but :22 longer" comment needs.

I discovered an album on Qobuz tonight that has the short 3:37 single version of Songbird. Not sure if it ever was released on CD or not but it's on Qobuz.

Clive Davis: The Soundtrack Of Our Lives

This collection also features the mono 2:42 single version of Piece Of My Heart from Big Brother & The Holding Company.

According to Discogs, the CD was released in Japan, Taiwan, Australia, and Europe.

Thanks for checking on that Marcelo. So, the CD won't appear in the database but it gives another option for Kenny G and Big Brother. There are several other single versions on the Clive David album as well.

FYI, there are two edits to form the short 45 version ("Single Version" on the promo CD single) from the LP version ("Album Version" on the promo CD single), plus an early fade.

The first edit removes 8 beats from 0:04.0 to 0:11.0 of the LP version. (Edit at 0:04.0 of the 45.)

The second edit removes 64 beats from 2:22.2 to 3:18.9 of the LP version. (Edit at 2:15.0 of the 45.)

The 45 fade is from 3:19 to 3:38 of the 45. If the 45 weren't faded early, the version with just the two edits would run about 22 seconds longer - that's what on the Greatest Hits album.

One more detail:

Discogs shows various North American 45 pressings:

Arista Canada AS1-9561, matrix "AS1-9561-SA", copyright 1986, commercial release, printed 5:00

Arista US AS1-9573, matrix "AS1-9573-SA", copyright 1986, promo shown; may not be commercial release, printed 5:00

Arista US AS1-9588, matrix "AS1-9588-SA", copyright "1986, 1987", commercial release, printed 4:51

Arista US AS1-9588, matrix "AS1-9588-SAS", copyright "1986, 1987", commercial release, printed 3:29

It's clear that first pressings of the single on Arista included the LP version. It's called "Album Version" on the US promo CD single, and "Extended" on the European promo 12" single, and "Full Length Version" on the UK commercial 12" single.

It's also clear that later pressings of the single on Arista included the edited version. It's called "Single Version" on the US promo CD single, and "7" Version" on the European promo 12" single.

The UK, Japan, and Australia/New Zealand 45s all included the edited version.

It's safe to say that the "Single Version" was the hit. I never heard the Album Version on the radio at all back in 1987.
