Just found out something interesting about ABC's debut single, which was not released in the United States. The single was remixed and actually five seconds LONGER than the album version.
The album version can be heard here, running 3:30: ABC - Tears Are Not Enough (LP version) ...and the single version can be heard here, running 3:35: ABC - Tears Are Not Enough (single version) The only digital copy of the single version is on the 1981 Now Yearbook, CD 4, but it's a little compressed/limited for my tastes. Does anybody know if the 7" single version has shown up in digital forma anywhere else with greater dynamic range? |

A detail or two:
The single was actually released first, in Oct 1981. The single was produced by Steve Brown, before Trevor Horn worked with the band. This was the first single credited to ABC (earlier releases without Martin Fry were credited to Vice Versa). The next two singles by ABC were "Poison Arrow" (released Feb 1982) and "The Look Of Love" (released May 1982), both produced by Trevor Horn. The full album The Lexicon Of Love was finally released in Jun 1982. The album included all three of the above, but with the Trevor Horn production applied to "Tears Are Not Enough" for inclusion on the album. The LP version of "Tears" includes a cool keyboard solo, which is absent from the original Steve Brown 45. The superb ABC greatest hits album Absolutely (1990) includes the LP version of "Tears". (All release dates are UK, and are courtesy of Discogs.) Edited by crapfromthepast - 6 hours 58 minutes ago at 10:25pm |

There's a lot of crap on the radio, but there's only one Crap From The Past.

The single version is also on the European compilation CD Gold, which also contains the single version of "Ocean Blue" and the UK single version of "When Smokey Sings".
