I am hoping that someone has the history on the "alternate take" of this great song that appears on the "Notting Hill" Original Soundtrack. Clearly, it is an alternate lead vocal by Steve Winwood and it features a different second verse than found on the original 45 from 1967. Also, there are no background vocals as on the original 45. I can't tell by comparing the two if they both have the same instrumental track with an alternative vocal (minus the background vocals). The fade is about 5 seconds longer on the alternate take.

I have checked all of my usual internet sites to try to find something about the history of the alternate take and why it (apparently) was first issued on the Notting Hill OST 32 years after the song's original release.

Can anyone provide any information on this issue?

Thanks. Dan

Is this the UK version of the song? I had heard that the UK version had some differences such as the cowbell overdub being missing, etc....

Tom, the "Notting Hill" version, in addition to the differences described in my original post, does not have the cowbell overdub.

I listened to all of the other CDs and LPs in my collection where the song appears (including the English "Ready Steady Go!" CD (Dave Clark International 9342) and the English "The Best Of The Spencer Davis Group Featuring Steve Winwood" LP (Island 9070) as well as the U.S. "Striptease" OST CD (EMI 52498) and the U.S. "The Best Of The Spencer Davis Group" CD (EMI America 46598)) and all of these were the original 45 version, so it appears that the well-known 45 version was released by in the U.S. and in the U.K.

My commercial 45, which is mono and confirmed as United Artists 50108,
with handwritten deadwax info of "ZTSP 122964 1A", has a listed time of
(2:51), but an actual time of (2:47).

I have recently acquired a United Artists 50108 promo 45 copy, It also has a
listed time of (2:51), but has an actual time of (2:50). Deadwax info for my
promo 45 is a handwritten "ZTSP-122964-1D".

my commercial 45 issued as united artist 50108 list the run
time as 2:51 but actually runs 2:45...you'll need to pitch
up the cd version slightly and then fade out for 0:07 from
2:38 to 2:45.....the run out groove etching is 'ZTSP-
122964-1H'
