Disappointing but not surprising. I liked that series and I have them all. I don't know why they just couldn't do a digital-only thing instead of
stopping it altogether. That way they could keep up the series without having the cost of production for the CD's. |

From the article:
"...An Academy spokesperson injected a hopeful note: “The CD is taking a year off and conversations will be had next year on how to proceed in this new music consumption world.”.." |

"Taking a year off" is apparently code word for it is too much work. Not that the CD's ever compared to the NOW series. Honestly another sign the CD will disappear in the next few years. Even the NOW series isn't selling what it used to on CD. I think the cost of assembling these comps when they don't sell units vs actually putting them on 7 digital or Qobuz is insane. No CD, no overhead. Make people buy the digital album if you have to. Could have done that with the Grammy's... |

Favorite two expressions to live by on this board: "You can't download vinyl" and "Not everything is available on CD."

Unless a new way of consuming music comes along in the next year, I can't imagine what other options they'd have except digital downloads and streaming, which they could be doing now. Or unless CD sales magically pick up before then. |

Maybe they finally realized that the people who are still buying new CDs (usually older and more demanding of audio quality) are not the same demographic who is necessarily interested in most of the latest Grammy-nominated music (Beyoncé, Taylor Swift, Justin Bieber, etc.).
Also arranging all the necessary royalties and obtaining the master recordings for a physical media release is much more complicated than simply posting a playlist online and letting the streaming/download platforms take care of all the work on their end. |

One nice thing with the NOW series is that they often contained the clean and/or radio versions of the hits. I've never used either of the d/l sites you mentioned...do they offer the same? Downloading definitely changed the game...no longer do you have to buy an entire CD when you're only interested in 1 or 2 songs on it. I'd imagine most of the Grammy nominees' songs are readily available.
Good point. Then again, according to the hype vinyl LPs are flying off the shelves, with millennials leading the charge. Interesting to note that the Grammy collection isn't available in that format either. I'm on the older end of the boomer generation and even though I still listen to contemporary radio, I don't really follow it anymore and most of the Grammy nominees/winners are songs/artists I'm not familiar with. They did issue at least 2 of the Grammy nominees sets on vinyl in
years past - I own them - but they weren’t big sellers so I can’t imagine they’d try again unless they narrow the track listing down to a more specific category. The catch all little of everything approach from more recent volumes limit their appeal in my view to more casual music fans. |
