After obtaining a copy of the promo 45 for Heart's "Barracuda," I am now skeptical about the three database CDs which list "this is the 45 dj edit."
On the short side of the promo, the mix is mono, and there are two places where this mix differs from the stereo. First, there are two extra bass notes on the mono promo 45 right before the first verse starts. These bass notes are not on the stereo version. Second, on the fadeout of the promo 45, there is an extra guitar overdub not on the stereo version. Can anyone verify if the so-called DJ edit on CD matches my description above? What makes me skeptical is that those CD versions are all stereo. I can send audio from the actual promo 45 for comparisons. Edited by aaronk |

Aaron, I will shoot you out the "DJ edit on CD", from my V/A "Rock: The Train Kept A Rollin'" collection, for your comparison/analysis.

Jim, thanks for helping solve this mystery. The version on this CD is just an early fade of the stereo version. It does not have the extra overdub on the fadeout or the extra bass notes. It's a very picky detail, but I suppose it would make the database CDs "LP faded early" instead of "DJ edit."

The “LP faded early” version was issued as the commercial 45 in the
UK and in Canada (where the song reached #2). |

Because of the mix differences in mono that Aaron cites specifically in the mono mix it doesn't appear a proper stereo can be made of it. Not sure if Bill C can make a proper stereo DES of it though based on the differences Aaron cites. Odd that in 1977 when every 45 was pretty much stereo at that point we have something mixed down to mono differently. Odd.
