My commercial 45 has a listed time of (3:12), and an actual time of (3:11). The only current database CD which states it is the "45 version" lists a time of (3:06), which is :05 shorter than my 45 runs.

thanks to paul....i just compared the vinyl 45 to the
soul hits of the 70's
cd version which is supposed to be the 45
version.....but...to my ears the spoken word intro is re-
recorded or at the least not the same version....because
it doesn't have the same annunciation and
emphasis.......most obvious is on the word 'you' at the
0:15 mark of the soul hits cd version....as

there's probably a lot of you girls out there,
hung up on a man,
and your caught in that old familiar way,
of wanting someone that don't want you

on the 45 she says the word 'you' as 'chew'

can anyone else do an A/B to see if they hear it the way
i do?

so...in my opinion....the version on the soul hits of the
70's should be classified as neither

I say it is an edit of the LP version in an unsuccessful attempt at recreating the 45. You are correct in that the spoken introduction is not the same as it is on the 45 but it does sound to me like it is identical to the introduction on the LP.

pat, i would agree with your assessment......the soul hits cd version and the lp version have the same sounding spoken word intro and the vinyl 45 intro was re-recorded or augmented from the lp version...

So, the LP version runs 4:14? According to discogs, the "Soulful Tapestry"
LP shows a timing of 3:13, while the "Sweet Replies" shows 3:03.

Even H-D-H 3902 "Greatest Hits" CD shows a timing of 3:03 on discogs!

The first instance of the 4:14 version I can find is on a 2002 CD "Best Of
Honey Cone"

https://www.discogs.com/Honey-Cone-The-Best-Of-Honey-
Cone/release/4391208

Now, I know discogs timings are not necessarily accurate, but can anyone
who owns these LPs verify their timings/version for this song? We know
Honey Cone songs (as with other HDH productions on Hot Wax) saw
different versions quite often (e.g., "Want Ads").

Just found a "Sweet Replies" vinyl playing on Youtube.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=_JAX6kMxC84

Seems this is indeed a 3:03 version, same recording, but without the spoken
intro.

I guess they, once again, changed the track for "Soulful Tapestry" and
released it as a 45. So, what's the version on "Soulful Tapestry"?

The Soulful Tapestry album states a running time of (3:13) but actually runs (4:14).

Did Hot Wax ever issue a promo 45 with that shorter 3:03 version that cuts the spoken word intro? "Want Ads" appeared on two different LPs back then (and that song was not identical on both albums) so is it possible that the same thing happened with "The Day I Found Myself." I think David might be on to something. The reason I say that is the box set issued a few years ago that was supposed to have every a and b side of every Hot Wax single issued (along with the other Holland, Dozier, Holland labels) had the 3:03 version on it. My guess is that edit was issued on vinyl back then somewhere (I doubt they created that edit for just that box set).

Edit: The UK 45 edit released in 1972 runs 3:03 so that explains where that version first appeared on vinyl.
