OK, here's one. Dylan's on my mind since his birthday was yesterday (same as my mother's).

Is the 45 just a straight fade of the full-length version, or is it an edit as well as being faded early?

Also, is the 45 uncensored like the LP (I'm assuming, which is dangerous, that a censored radio version was put out)?

If I recall correctly, the commercial 45 broke the song up into parts 1 and 2. Whitburn lists Part 2 as the single.   I seem to remember that side fading in on one of the instrumental interludes between verses.

While I don't have the stock 45, I do have two different double-sided, 7" promo singles. One, a 45, has the 3:45 stereo and mono edited mixes. The other, a 33 1/3 without the large spindle hole, is a 8:34 stereo/mono full length version. I don't remember which one was played, for neither my station nor most others aired it.

Actually, Whitburn lists Part 1 as the single.

Not necessarily, Ed, if you can tell me if I simulated the 45 properly. I made the point of stoppage the (3:44) mark, I started the fade at about (3:37), and left the S-word in.

If I'm close, then I don't need the 45. If I'm way off, then it wouldn't hurt to have it (unless it would just be easier to tell me where I went astray).

Wow, I stand corrected.

I think I was confusing that with Chicago's "Dialogue". Are there many other 2-part hits, where Part II was the hit? I can think of Gary Glitter's "Rock and Roll" and Cozy Cole - Topsy. Were there many others?

Probably wasn't "Dialogue." The 45 version is an edit of the LP version (not merely a fade). The version on Chicago's Greatest Hits, Volume 2 CD wasn't the 45 (the 45 is gettable on a couple of the Rhino releases).

Pink Floyd's "Another Brick in the Wall (Part 2)" comes to mind. Overall, it doesn't appear there are very many "part 2" Top 40 hits.

I could've sworn that Whitburn called that Part II, but I see that's wrong too...he calls it Parts I & II.

Wow - I am batting poorly today. :)
