Does anyone know the difference between the 45 and LP versions?

John, the ABC-Paramount 45 is an edit. The stated time is (2:48) and the actual time is (2:50).
The 1973 ABC Goldies 45 and the later MCA 45 reissues, which all shared the same D-2408 catalog number, are in mono. Unfortunately, they're also marred by an identical skip during the intro. |

How is that possible? You mean the 45 was created by a 45? |

It sure sounds like it, Doug. The original "Amen"/"People Get Ready" reissue 45 - #1234 in ABC's Oldies Treasure Chest series - was sourced from the mono tapes. ABC consolidated its Oldies Treasure Chest series with the Dunhill Goldies 45 line in 1973. The old stampers were scrapped and new lacquers were cut for all previously reissued titles for the "new" Goldies 45 series, but by that time, the mono tapes were no longer in the ABC tape vault. Plan "B" probably would have been okay, had the individual dubbing "Amen" from an earlier 45 been attentive enough to notice the record skipping. The sound quality of the Goldies 45 dub was actually pretty good. Not so for the later MCA reissue, which definitely sounds like a needledrop of the Goldies 45 needledrop. The skip lived on, but the high end perished. Edited by Yah Shure |

Haven't tried yet, but I think I have a 45 dub. If so, I'll send it over.
As a side note, the cover of "Amen" by the Winstons has a drum break that many claim to be the most sampled drum break ever. It's used on pretty much every drum and bass recording, as well as several hip hop songs. There is even a wikipedia article about the "Amen Break." Edited by aaronk |

The 45 of "Amen" is sped up and has a very awkward edit
near the end. That's the difference. Here's a sample of the last several seconds to highlight the edit on the 45: http://ppl.ug/cxWq8yGxuGA/ Edited by The Hits Man |

Ah yes Aaron, i too read about the legendary "Amen Break"
..for those curious they called their cover "Amen, Brother" and it's the b-side of Color Him Father and also the entire album is available on I-tunes. |
