my commercial 45 issued as geffen 29983 of jennifer holliday's hit "and i am telling you i'm not going" states a run time on the label as 3:38 and does indeed run that length and is an edit of the 4:04 full length cd/lp version......this info should be added to the db.......thanks aaron for the edit a long time ago.....

My promo 45 for Geffen 29983 has a listed and actual (3:38) (Edit) version
on one side, and a non-described, listed (4:05), actual (4:04) version on
the other. This longer side of my promo 45 is clearly the song's LP
version.

A final note: as sometimes happens with songs from films/Original Cast
productions, the listed artist can sometimes be a bit nebulous. (I think of
"Dueling Banjos", which only ever said "From the Motion Picture
'Deliverance'" (last word in bold) on the 1973 WB 45. As such, all the DJs I
heard on AM radio simply called the group "Deliverance." Strangely, Eric
Weissberg did later get artist credit on WB reprint 45s, but Steve Mandell,
the other banjo player, never got official label credit, ever, for some
reason.) Another case was 1977's "Car Wash", for which early 45 copies
didn't show Rose Royce's name as the artist at all - it just said "From The
Motion Picture 'Car Wash.'" I only bring this last point up here, because my
promo 45 for this song shows the artist, in bold print, as "Dreamgirls".
Then, in very small print below, it says "Original Broadway Cast Sung by
Jennifer Holliday". To me, the motivation, in all 3 cases, is obvious: To
prominently list the name of the hit movie and/or play on the 45, instead
of some unknown artist, in an attempt by the labels to parlay/cash in on
the movie's (or play's) success, by also growing it into radio success.

That's interesting, Jim! I bet you're right that they were simply trying to get more marketing exposure for the movies and plays you mentioned.

As for the Jennifer Holliday song, the only thing I can add is that the 45 version is an out-of-sequence edit that requires some looping for the ending.

Can anyone please send me a WAV/flac of the single edit, as it sounds like a complicated edit, being out of sequence?

Well, I finally splurged on the 45 of this and WTF were
they thinking? That edit is completely ridiculous and, to
anyone at all familiar with the song, would probably get
them screaming that the record just skipped. What a
disaster-
it's a shame that anyone making a JH singles collection
would have to include this mess. Just my 2 cents.
