The actual commercial 45 run time of the Allman Brothers Band's "Jessica" is 4:01. (Timing info compliments of Jim. The printed record label time is 4:00.) Database CDs containing a "45 version" comment have run times ranging from 4:00-4:08.

In comparing 2 files, one from 18 Rock Classics, Vol. 2and one from Stand Back: The Anthology, the version from Anthology runs about 3 seconds slower than the version from Classics. This perhaps may indicate a speed issue on some of the listed 45 versions.

The "Anthology" cd presents an improper edit of the LP version in an unsuccessful attempt at recreating the 45 version.

Someone tell me how this classic only hit #65 on Billboard?
Favorite two expressions to live by on this board: "You can't download vinyl" and "Not everything is available on CD."

Top 40 radio didn't embrace the song like they did with their previous hit "Ramblin Man." In fact, it
didn't make the Top 10 in any of the surveys currently listed at ARSA. In addition, most fans of the band
probably already had the album and didn't need the single.

It did chart higher in the other 2 major trades (#33 in Cash Box and #55 in Record World), so there's that.

It also reached #29 on Billboard's Easy Listening (later known as Adult Contemporary) chart.

Jessica seems to be a go-to favorite for "bumper" music on radio
talk shows. The Morning Joe Show on MSNBC has it in a regular
rotation for the same purpose.

Odd that the first post indicates database timings, yet the song is not in the
database (#65 being far off Top 40).

I found two supposed posts of the 45 on YouTube, one from The45Prof and
another. They are not the same. It's clear the second one is a 45 playing.

Which one is correct? And, Pat, how/where in the song is Anthology an
incorrect edit? Can it be corrected?

The only edited version that I heard when the track was a
single was the second one from 'Danny's 45s".

I remember distinctly ('cos I owned the LP) that I hated
the way it faded out in a guitar solo instead of the
resolve of the melodic hook.

David I removed the Jessica entry in the database yesterday
as that song was not a top 40 hit. Unfortunately I also
deleted all my supporting documentation related to the
entries for that song so I cannot now tell you why the
Anthology cd was an incorrect edit of the LP version
designed to recreate the 45.
