my commercial 45 for the johnny cash song 'folsom prison
blues' issued as columbia 44513 states the run time on the label as 2:46 but only runs 2:44....i only point this out because the db has a wide range of running times of the live version as (2:39-2:49) |

I just picked up a promo 45 for his 1968 Top 40 hit, "Folsom Prison
Blues". Also confirmed as Columbia 44513, as both mine and Ed's stock copies noted above are, my promo 45 has entirely different particulars. Perhaps these promo 45 details will give us some hints as to why there's an usually wide range of actual CD times in the db for this song. First off, although both Ed's and my stock 45 copies have listed times of (2:46), my stock 45's actual time is (2:45). Ed did not provide deadwax info for his stock 45 copy in his earlier post , but my commercial 45 has machine-stamped deadwax of "ZSP136855-1G". But my promo 45, which includes the exact same mono version on both sides, right down to the deadwax info (a handwritten "JZSP-136855-3C"). It has a listed time of (2:40), and an actual time of just (2:36). Despite the unusually wide actual time range for its current db CD appearances (:10 seconds; (2:39-2:49)), my promo 45's actual time is nonetheless still :03 outside of that time range, at (2:36), with the shortest current db CD length being (2:39). I currently have no idea exactly what is making up the :09 actual second difference between my (2:36) promo 45 and my (2:45) stock 45, so I'll once again be enlisting the help of super audio sleuths Aaron & Mark, by shooting them both out dubs of my promo & stock 45s, for whenever time allows in their busy schedules for a full analysis. Okay. Just got to this in the top 40 of this hit and here is what I found:
The mono version of 2:45 is on the Original Golden Hits Vol 1 timing in at 2:49. The stereo version is 2:36 and is on I Walk The Line. The live version is 2:42 and on The Essential. I don't think the promo 45 mono made CD. I guess Jim never sent anything to Aaron or Mark. Anyone who knows chime in! Edited by PopArchivist |

Favorite two expressions to live by on this board: "You can't download vinyl" and "Not everything is available on CD."

I'm aware of two Johnny Cash CD's containing the MONO
single version of the live 1968 version of Folsom Prison Blues: Johnny Cash - Columbia Records 1958-1986 [CGK 40637] - released 1987 - printed time listed as 2:44 16 Biggest Hits [CK 69739] - released 1999 - printed time listed as 2:45 On both CD's the music ends at 2:38 and applause trails to 2:44. To my ears the 1987 disc sounds brighter. The Folsom Prison Blues single was released weeks after the April 4, 1968 shooting of Dr. King. The single debuted on the Billboard Hot 100 pop survey on May 25 and one week later on the Billboard Country survey on June 1. The assassination of Robert F. Kennedy on June 5th caused many stations to drop the recording due to the line "..I shot a man in Reno, just to watch him die..." Although Cash initially objected, Columbia convinced him to allow an edited version to be released to radio. The edit just extracted the questionable line so to those already familiar with the recording it sounded like the record "skipped." Just a few thousand promotional copies were pressed and distributed to radio stations. I recall hearing that version played on the radio and wondered what happened to the record!!!! Searched YouTube but could not find a post of that edited version. Here's a link to a label scan of the edited "Special Rush Reservice" promo 45 posted to Discogs. The label time lists 2:40 Perhaps that's the reason for the 2:39 running time listing in the database.
