The version of "We R Who We R" by Ke$ha on Now 37 is censored.
It's not censored on the Cannibal album. The line is "I'm telling you 'bout the shit we do." Also, any chance we can fix the search function on the database to be able to search for artists like Kesha who stylize their names with dollar signs and other stuff? Right now "Kesha" doesn't return anything; you have to type in "Ke$ha" to use the search. |

I would like to get some input from the class on this lyric line "telling you 'bout the shit we do". When I listen to this line on the Cannibal cd at 1:22 I hear an sh and no it -- same on Now 37 so I would say they are both censored. Any other class members wish to enter their opinion?
Now with regard to searching for Kesha vs Ke$ha no there is no other way available to allow the search function to list closely related words. The official name is Ke$ha on the cd jacket and that is what you should search for. |

On Cannibal, it is clearly censored. I hear sh and no it. The whole word is "swooshed."
Were there clean and not clean versions of Cannibal? I do not have NOW 37 available to check that one for the censoring. |

On itunes, this song is available on Now 37, Cannibal, and on the "Animal
+ Cannibal" Deluxe Edition. The samples for each contain the line in question, so the itunes samples may be a good place to listen if you don't own these CDs. All 3 of these CDs are also listed in the database. First, Pat, is it possible you're listening to the "Animal + Cannibal" Deluxe Edition and not just the regular Cannibal CD? I ask because this is what I hear: --On Now 37, I hear a swoosh sound in place of the word "shit." Not just sh-- then silence. Sounds like padj79 is hearing the same sound. --On Cannibal, it's definitely a different sound. It sounds to me like it's the full word "shit," but whatever it is, it is different than the swoosh sound on Now 37. --Now, I don't own the "Animal + Cannibal" Deluxe Edition but I can hear the sample on itunes. I was expecting this to be the same as the Cannibal version, but it's not. It sounds like the swoosh sound that appears on Now 37. I don't know if there were clean and explicit versions of Cannibal and/or the "Animal + Cannibal" Deluxe Edition. I'd somewhat doubt it since there isn't a whole lot of vulgarity on the album but padj79 is saying he hears a swoosh on Cannibal and that's not what I hear. I suppose it's possible that the itunes tracks don't match the actual physical CDs but I can confirm they do match my versions of Now 37 (censored) and Cannibal (something different). I just don't know about the "Animal + Cannibal" Deluxe Edition because I don't physically own it. But the itunes sample is censored and matches Now 37. Edited by JL328 |

One thing that might help is if you list her as "Ke$ha (Kesha)" like you've done with a handful of other artists. That way it would show with or without the $ in a search. |

+1 on that, especially since I don't believe she's using the $ spelling anymore. |

It appears everyone is in agreement that all cd appearances to date of the song We R Who We R are censored in one form or another.
Correct me if I am wrong but no top 40 hits up till now by the artist known as Ke$ha have been issued under the name Kesha. |

Also, the German CD single of We R Who We R is censored in the same swooshing manner that I described for Cannibal.
This German single is paired with Animal [Dave Aude Remix] as track 2. |

I'm not in agreement here yet, Pat. As I said I have a version of the song that sounds to me to be uncensored. If you go to iTunes and listen to the samples of both the stand alone single and the version on "Cannibal," they both sound uncensored. Also, if you go to Amazon, there is an "explicit" version listed on Cannibal that also sounds uncensored. I'm listening on my computer to the (uncensored) version that I think came from Cannibal (at least that's how I have it labeled) but I'm trying to dig out the actual physical CD to make sure. I did a little digging on the Internet and although it's just chatter, there also seems to be some discussion (on the Amazon page for instance) about the CD having been re-released uncensored after the initial pressing was censored. I'm in for a penny and a pound on this issue now, so I'll report back on this. As for the Kesha vs. Ke$ha issue, she dropped the dollar sign in January 2014, which was after her last hit. I'm not gonna die on this hill but I think it's a matter of what users will search for when looking for this artist. My first instinct was to type "Kesha" since a $ isn't a real letter and I came up empty. To me, it's the same situation with Pink. To my knowledge, Pink has never released any material as "Pink." It has always been as "P!nk." But the database recognizes her as "Pink," presumably because the exclamation point isn't a real letter and most people wouldn't think to search that way. Just my two cents but I'll defer. |
