I know there are other threads about top 40 hits not yet on CD, but they
all seem a bit outdated. That said, I noticed that there are several late 60s (1964-69) hits not available on U.S. CD that appear to be on iTunes, at least in some form. I wouldn't mind some help from anybody who knows these songs a little better than I do..... CHARTBUSTERS 1964 SHE'S THE ONE This appears on iTunes on an EP also called "She's the One." It runs 2:23 which is roughly equivalent to the original. A quick listen makes me believe that this is indeed the original recording. Any thoughts? CLIFF RICHARD 1964 IT'S ALL IN THE GAME This appears on iTunes on a 1987 Cliff Richard release called "Love Songs." That album appears to be an album full of covers. It runs 3:13 but I don't know what the original ran. Judging from the album it comes from, my hunch is this is a remake. But, that said, I have to imagine that most Cliff Richard hits are available on UK imports. Anybody know? DAVE CLARK FIVE 1967 YOU MUST HAVE BEEN A BEAUTIFUL BABY This song came from the 1967 LP "Everybody Knows," and that album is available digitally on iTunes (although it seems to have a slightly different track lineup). This song runs 2:17 on iTunes and that is on track with the original. Pretty sure this is the original recording. FORTUNES 1965 HERE IT COMES AGAIN This song literally appears on about 25 different iTunes albums. It is quite clearly labeled as a "re-recording" on most of these "albums." Although there are clearly at least 3 different recordings available on iTunes, I don't think any of them are the original, but I don't know this tune well enough to pick out the subtleties. HESITATIONS 1968 BORN FREE This track came from the 1968 album also titled "Born Free" and it appears that the entire album is available on iTunes. The fact that the whole album is there makes me comfortable this is the original recording. There is also a version on a digital album called "Soul Classics," which sounds like a re-recording. MARGARET WHITING 1966 WHEEL OF HURT I don't know this song well. The track on iTunes is on a digital album called "I Get a Kick Out of You." According to iTunes, it is a 2008 release from "Classic Records." The track runs 2:46 which is roughly equivalent to the original (I think). The iTunes album looks generic and highly suspect. That said, the iTunes sample sounds a lot like the original. Does anybody know this song well enough to comment? MILLIE SMALL 1964 SWEET WILLIAM This track appears on iTunes on a digital album called "50s and 60s Lost and Found Records, Vol. 1." This is a 2011 release from "Master Classic Records." It runs 1:42 on iTunes, which matches the original recording. Sounds right, too. I think this one is legit. If anybody has any further info on these lost tunes or if anybody can positively remove any doubt that any of the above are, indeed, the original recordings, I would appreciate any input. Thanks much. |

The Dave Clark Five is the correct version and is apparently licensed directly from Dave Clark himself. Most or all of the Dave Clark Five albums available at iTunes have a different track line up than the original vinyl versons. It's been suggested that Dave replaced songs over royalty disputes with other band members.

Thank you, Bill. That's good information and I had not heard that about the royalties issue. I'm glad that "You Must Have Been a Beautiful Baby" made the cut since it's not available elsewhere. I was pretty confident that was the original recording, but I appreciate the confirmation.
Well, that's one lost hit down. Anybody have any info on the other six? |

The Chartbusters' "She's The One" is the hit version. It's been available on iTunes since at least 2008 (which was when I bought it).
Cliff Richard's Love Songs compilation was originally released in 1981 as a 2-LP set in many countries. They are not re-recordings. (Although the songs that had been released in the U.S. were released on a number of labels, in the UK they were all on EMI). I was intrigued enough to download the Hesitations, Margaret Whiting, and Millie Small songs. I only have a Canadian 45 of "Born Free" (Kapp 878, same as the US release). The download I purchased (from Soul Classics) is the same recording as my 45, but slower. My 45 runs (2:30) and the download (2:35). The download of "The Wheel Of Hurt" is the same version as my U.S. 45. The bad news is that it appears that the file I downloaded was corrupt as there are those static-like noises audible at times. Aside from that issue, it sounds like it was mastered from a clean record. I don't have an original 45 of "Sweet William", but I do have a Smash re-issue 45 (with the hit version of "My Boy Lollipop" on the flip). The download is the same version, but I don't think the sound quality of the download is all that good. It sounds rechanneled and was probably mastered from a record. |

Thanks, Paul.
So, are you saying that you believe that the version of "It's All in the Game" by Cliff Richard on Love Songs is, in fact, the original hit recording? |

Itunes lists 10 different sources for "Here It Comes Again" and there is only 1 that features the original hit version and that is from "Golden Hits Forever Vol. 7". The song is mono and runs (2:59) which is :05 shorter than the 45.

I downloaded Margaret Whiting's "The Wheel Of Hurt," which is mono, and it sounds like a vinyl dub heavily noise reduced. Does anyone know if a stereo mix was on an LP?

What label was it on? There are a TON of "copyright expired" Canadian and British releases on iTunes that are simply disc dubs of material that has lapsed out of copyright outside the US. |

Re: Margaret Whiting;
The album on I-tunes and Spotify, as mentioned by JL328, is on Classic records. I've seen this label on other digital oldies releases, and yes seems to often use disc dubs as sources - and in this case is mono and quite poor sound (digital clicks, distortion, and over-processed.) The original stereo LP was on London records. I presume that would mean controlled by Universal in the US unless the rights have changed hands. MM |
