   Is the CD Single version that hit #16 after the 9/11 attacks the original 

recording that hit the Country Charts in 1984, or a re-recording?  It sounds a 

little different to my ear, making it, the canonical 'hit' version, a slight variant 

from the best-known original.

	I think it's a re-recording, but I'm only basing this on the information from the Discogs page about the CD single: (c)(p) 2001 Curb Records. (p) 1994 Tree Productions. Courtesy of Tree Productions. And a user posted this information: Songs previously released in 1992 and 1994.

	Billboard combined the "points" from three different versions into one listing. For the first five weeks, the Hot 100 showed the label as "MCA Nashville Album Cut". For those first five weeks, the song charted almost entirely because of airplay from the original MCA version. After Curb released its CD single, Billboard started showing the label as "MCA Nashville/Capitol Nashville/Curb 73128". (Apparently, Greenwood had recorded the song for Capitol somewhere along the way as well.) Almost all the airplay points were from the MCA version and all sales points were from the Curb version. In the debate as to which version most deserves to be crowned the "hit" version, I give the edge to the MCA version, since the Curb single wasn't released until weeks after the song hit its peak chart position.

	I agree that the undisputed "hit" version is the original MCA LP version. The only reason the Curb CD single charted is because that was the only single availabile at the time, and I'm betting consumers didn't realize they were getting a re-recording when purchasing. For what it's worth, I do have a promo CD single of "God Bless The USA" on MCA: CD45-1335 1. non-described version (listed 3:09; actual 3:10) Although it has a copyright date of 1984, this would've been released in the fall of 1990. (The previous catalog #, CD45-1334, belongs to "Iesha" by Another Bad Creation.) Edited by aaronk
