couldn't find anything via a search of this title (can't fit the entire artist/title
into the subject field). Was the 45 the poor stereo narrow mix version that is on CD? |

I don't have the CD to compare, but yes the 45 is very
narrow, almost mono (with the exception of the horns in the intro). |

I have an RCA Gold Standard reissue 45. This has a minimal stereo image. The 45 version of Rhino's Soul Hits of the 70's Vol 2 has even less separation. The LP version on Nipper's Greatest Hits of the 70's has a much wider stereo image.

Your RCA Gold Standard 45 may even be pressed from original
stampers. The Red Label and early Black Label Gold Standard pressings share identical deadwax to my Orange label original pressing 45. |

Just FYI - I was examining the version on Rhino's Soul
Hits' Of The 70s Vol 2. This is NOT stereo with "poor separation" as noted in the database. This track is (E) ... it has reverb added to the left and right channels to simulate stereo but it is NOT stereo. If you have any digital software like Audition, etc... You can demonstrate this by "widening" the stereo image and your result will show that only the reverb gets wider. The music itself is in MONO. I'm curious if this is how it was released on the stereo 45. If so, the 45 was never real stereo. And this applies to any other CD in the database with the same description. MM Edited by MMathews |

Hello Mark,
I completely understand what you are trying to convey, but my ears and software tell me this is not a mono mix cleverly rechanneled. This single is mixed in "Raspberries-phonic" where most of the music information is ultimately mixed straight- down-the-middle, but the individual reverb-sends of different instruments and vox are to the left, right or stereo positions. Upon careful examination of a widened source, there is NO reverb on Charlene Gibson(?)'s lead vocal, while the background vocals have tons of stereo reverb. Some strings and horns have a little stereo imaging and different reverb panning. Why was it mixed this way? I can only guess they wanted to make a very "compatible" single. I noticed that there was no Mono side on the promo. Anybody else have any other opinions or comments? Andy |

Does anyone have a copy of the 45? Hopefully, they can answer
whether it was true stereo or electronic stereo. Pat? |

Nevermind, Hykker (Steve) answered my question in 2013.
Perhaps, the electronic stereo versions on CD might be considered the 45 mix? |

Note that AnotherProf has posted a 45 on YouTube, which can serve to tell us
what the 45 was: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ypN-N-sgw3A It is dubbed from his "stereo" 45. |

I love checking out the 45's on YouTube from AnotherProf and
the45Prof. Same guy? Anyways, the 45 that AnotherProf posted seems to match the narrow stereo listings in the database. Would this warrant a 45 mix via LP mix designation. Asking the class. |
