I have always wondered about their big hit "Heat Wave". Its first stereo
appearance I believe came in August 1966 on the stereo issue of the LP "A Collection Of 16 Big Hits, Vol. 2" (Tamla TS-256), however it was a different edit from the 45. The 45 often appeared rechanneled throughout its' release history. Then in the CD era, a 3:43 version appeared. I am wondering if this is perhaps the original complete session, the 45 (and original stereo version) being edited from this. Anyone know? Edited by davidclark |

Hi David,
Yes, i can help here. The first re-channeled appearances were apparently done just to get it on a stereo LP without mixing it from scratch. When they made the first true stereo mix for the "Big Hits" series, the engineer made a very simple error. The notes failed to mention that the song was edited from the full length session (in 2 places i think), so the first stereo mix you'll notice was faded to match the single's time, but since it wasn't edited it chopped off the entire ending. In the CD era, several engineers have had access to the session masters, so the newer stereo mix is the complete song without the edits in it. It's a simple matter of editing the long version to match the 45, if one wants it in stereo. MM |

That explains all the stereo neither versions in the
database. So those are all just early fades of the entire session. No surprise the correct stereo 45 edit hasn't shown up yet. We've seen that several times before. |
