I hear ya. About 20 years ago I'd reached the point of frustration on finding particular songs on the various compilation LPs/CDs/reels I had. That's when I bought my first computer, and one of the first things I used it for was to create a database of my compilations. Just kind of made up a filing scheme, then went thru all of the compilations and entered every song (when duplicate entries occurred I went with the best sounding copy)...if there were differences like mono/stereo, version, etc. kept them all. Lots of case by case decisions on that front.
Have had to migrate the database from one program to another several times over the years, but it sure has come in handy!!
If you're interested I can explain how I did things.
