My commercial 45, confirmed as Reprise 0606, has a listed time of (3:10) and an actual time of (3:12). This one has me puzzled, though. Three current database CDs offer the original recording in stereo, with their lengths to follow (Collectables CD-2:59, Collector's Choice CD-3:00, and Eric CD-2:58). All 3 run quite short, vs. my 45, while Time/Life offers the only mono database CD appearance, which runs (3:07), but is still :05 short. But to me, it is very unlike Eric's terrific "Hard-To-Find-45s-On-CD" series to include a version of a song that is a full :14 seconds shorter than the 45 runs. Maybe there were two different 1967 commercial 45 pressings? My 45's deadwax info is "K-5291-1E". I know we have some folks involved with producing the Eric CDs who sometimes check in to the Board; perhaps they could shed some light on this one for us.

I'm also wondering... Does anyone know the correct phonetic pronunciation of the artist's name?

Todd, she referred to herself as "Ma-KAY-ba". I always heard a lot of the pronounciation "Ma-KEE-ba" back in the day, but I believe those were just "seeing-the-name-in-print-guesses", from DJs and folks who bought the record. FYI, she just died this past November (2008), at age 76, of cardiac arrest, collapsing as she was leaving the stage at a concert in Italy. An absolute legend in her homeland of South Africa, before either one of them became famous worldwide, she was married to Hugh Masekela for 2 years, back in the mid-60's, and then later to "black power" icon Stokeley Carmichael.

Thanks for all the info, Jim! I can remember seeing a music video from Makeba while I was living in Europe in 1989. I didn't know who she was at the time and, now that I'm familiar with her 1967 hit "Pata Pata", I'm surprised to know she was still making records all those years later!

My 45's deadwax info is "K-5291-1F" and I'm basically getting the same time as Jim's (3:10-3:11, but my turntable may need slight adjusting, plus my 45 has a bit of surface noise). As far as I can tell, the Eric cd is just an early fade, albeit quite a bit early (by 12-14 seconds), as Jim stated. I don't detect any other differences by ear.

I have the original Reprise 45 0606 with deadwax "K--5291-1D" and it times out to 3:12. I've got all of the domestic CD versions and I agree that all appear to be an early fade of the original 45. You can hear Makeba say what sounds like the word "scotch" just as the CD versions fade, and that is the same as the 45 fade but just continues to be repeated more times.

By the way, the Collectables 2-CD compilation of Makeba's three original albums, "In Concert," "Pata Pata" and "Makeba!" is excellent!
