anyone can tell me when was the first appearance of this track with the cold
ending?

Also, sounds to me like there are different speeds for this track in general on
CD. Anyone can time the 45 and original LP version?

Having been one of the many eager viewers who'd taped the audio portion of the TV show when it originally aired, I'd gotten used to the cold ending on the 1967 TV version, and felt a bit let down when the polished, commercial release finally surfaced a year later with a faded ending. But its great bass line made me forget that pretty quickly. :)

I first heard the hit version's cold ending on the vinyl Arista Then & Now LP, which came out ahead of the CD issue. Had they been issued simultaneously, I wouldn't have bothered getting the LP.    

All of these Colgems vinyl appearances have the faded ending:

In addition, my New Zealand pressing of the 1979 Australian 40 Timeless Hits From The Monkees compilation LP [Arista MONK 1/2] also has the faded ending.

The 2.4-second timing difference between the original 1968 45 and LP tracks is due primarily to a speed difference. The 45 does have a quickie percussive beat at the very end that was trimmed from the Birds, The Bees... LP track, but the 45's speed is definitely slower.
