Not to my ears. I didn't hear any turntable rumble, or ticks and pops, or any evidence of noise reduction on the fade.

There's a lot of crap on the radio, but there's only one Crap From The Past.

I suppose you could note that it is also the 12" Single version, but then that is the only way it was released in the U.S. There was a 45 version, but only in the UK. I can add notations for these: Volume 2: So Long - Fischer-Z (LP Version) Volume 6: Wot - Captain Sensible (45 version) Never Say Never - Romeo Void (45 version which is also censored). Re: "She Blinded Me With Science" - everyone refers to the short version as the promo edit .. but I thought I'd expand on that a little. The short version is also the original LP version from the album "The Golden Age Of Wireless" in 1982. The 5:09 version is the UK 12" single extended version. In 1983 they released the 5-track mini LP "Blinded By Science" which is basically 12" single versions of songs from "Wireless" and the stock 45 is taken from that. Can't think of anything else for now. MM |

<WHAT DO ALL THE PEOPLE KNOW - Monroes - taken from vinyl here; use the version from Living In Oblivion Vol. 3, which is taken from tape >
Wow, that's a very clean source. I never knew this was from vinyl, and I used Rhino as the source. I'll have to use Living in Oblivion Vol. 3. |

CFTP, I think you're right about The Fools - "It's A Night For Beautiful Girls" likely being the LP version.
Discogs lists the LP version as running about 3:53 (which this version does). It indicates some singles had a 3:16 version, which I doubt... but it did lead me to this recording: The Fools - It's A Night For Beautiful Girls (single version?). If you compare it to the one from JCGE, it runs about 2% faster, some of the lyrics are different and it's a different vocal take on top of that, and the instrumentation is slightly different, with a more aggressive and guitar-driven sound. I wonder if the single version has ever seen a digital release? I assume not, which is a shame because I like it better than the alleged LP version. For reference, I'm posting the lyrics to both versions below. The first line is the alleged single version, the line in parenthesis is the alleged LP version. -- It's a night, oh yeah, for beautiful girls (It's a night, oh yeah, for beautiful girls) It's a night, yes it is, for beautiful girls (It's a night, yes it is, for beautiful girls) Throw another taco on the fire, sweet senorita (Something's gonna happen here tonight, I can feel it) Dance with me 'til morning to the Cucaracha beat-a (Stay with me 'til morning, I really need it) Because ('cuz) It's a night, oh yeah, for beautiful girls (It's a night, oh yeah, for beautiful girls) Whoah, whoah, whoah, whoah, for beautiful girls (Whoah, whoah, whoah, whoah, for beautiful girls) Girls, girls girls girls girls everywhere (Girls, girls girls girls girls everywhere) Girls girls girls girls in my hair (Girls girls girls girls in my hair) Going to a nightclub, and I'll peek under the table (Going to a nightclub, and I'll peek under the table) Maybe find some legs down there, that look like Betty Grable (Maybe find some legs down there, that look like Betty Grable) It's a night, oh yeah, for beautiful girls (It's a night, oh yeah, for beautiful girls) Tell me what it is (What is it?) It's a night for beautiful girls (It's a night for beautiful girls) Can I play? (-) Going to a nightclub and I drink some more tequila (Going to a nightclub and I drink some more tequila) Maybe find some legs down there I can give a little feel-a (Maybe find some legs down there I can give a little feel-a) |

I haven't actually timed it, but my commercial single has a listed time of 3:16. The song was a pretty big hit here in New England in the late winter of '80, not surprising since the band was from Boston and had quite a following. |

Thanks, Ron. Thought I could hear some sibilance on the vocals, but maybe that's just how they were recorded. |

Hykker, have you ever found a digital source for the single version of "It's A Night For Beautiful Girls?"
If not, I may have to see if I can find a really clean needle drop of the single; to my ears, it blows away the LP version. I get the feeling there were a lot of regional hits like that this barely moved the needle on the national charts. Between that, and songs that weren't big at the time but are "standards" today, it's tough to determine what should and shouldn't be played sometimes... |

I'll take a look to see if I have either a stock or promo 45 for this.

I did not have a copy, but I just placed an order for a NM stock 45.

I heard this song a lot on Massachusetts radio in 1980. A few years back I bought the 45 to edit the Rhino "New Wave" version to the single version. I don't recall the specifics (i.e. if the mix was different) but I edited the long version to have the structure of the 45 version. Are you saying there are unique lyrics in the single version that are nowhere to be found on the LP version? I thought I recall having to rearrange the song around and completely eliminate a section but don't recall any lyrics not being available on the CD/album version. It's funny - when I heard the Rhino version I recall not liking the song as much as I remembered liking it on the radio. Now I'm not sure if it was because there was a single mix or sections edited around differently, leaving out a section that I didn't care for on the Rhino version.
BTW, The same thing happened with Billy Joel's "Piano Man". I bought the 45 when it was out. I knew the album version had that jazzy intro and more verses & storyline, and when I bought Billy's "Greatest Hits Vol 1 & 2" CD, I recall that my instant reaction to "Piano Man" was "This wasn't as good as I remembered". I knew the CD version was longer than the 45, but in '85-'86-ish, my ears weren't as tuned in to know it was a different mix than my 45. Years later, when someone here pointed out that the single mix existed and was available on that import CD, I bought it, and once again, my love for "Piano Man" was restored. :) All the extra mandolins, guitars, etc. really bring that song to life! But I hadn't figured it out in '85/'86. Edited by EdisonLite |
