It appears (from the video, at least) that the single edit of Pink Floyd's "Learning To Fly" can't really be made from the album version.
You can cut out 2:16 to 2:39 (from the word "degrees" to the word "strobes," trimming the "s" on the end of "degrees") although it seems to be more of a quick cross-fade. You can also fade it early, assuming the single is 4:18 - 4:21 in length (video vs. single label length). However, things fall apart about 2:42 in your new edit, for two or three reasons: 1) The reverb on the voice sounds a lot thicker on the album version. 2) There's an extra "crunch" sound in the percussion on the album version starting about 3:41 & happening about every 8 beats. 3) There may also be extra wind sfx, or at least mixed differently. Although it spent 3 weeks at #1 on the mainstream rock chart, because it only made it to #70 on the hot 100 charts, it isn't listed in the database. Can anybody tell me if, and where, the single mix can be found on CD? Thanks in advance for your help!!! Yes, there's a disc called "Super Sessions Volume One" on Foundation Records that has the single version.

Excellent! Thank you, Aaron; looks like it's available on Amazon for about $5... easily worth it. :)

The same disc was also sold as Gold & Platinum Vol. 5 from Realm Records, the in-house brand of Columbia Record Club. |

ROTFL, CFTP!!! You're correct! And-d-d... I already have that one on my shelf. Had a copy & didn't even know it. :)
Now if I can just find out if the label for the 7" if Pink Floyd's "On The Turning Away" listing 4:43 instead of 5:43 is a misprint, I'll be in great shape! Thanks for all of your help; I'm going through mainstream rock #1 hits of the 80s for my "filler" category (to get me to the top of the hour if I don't have enough "pop" songs). It adds a little more depth to the standard pop mix of ballads, etc. Off to rip, |

Curious: the version on G&P Vol. 5 DOES have that "crunch" at 3:41 & following... upon listening back to the video, it's there, too, just possibly quieter.
I could have lived with my edit, but I'm happier to have the genuine edit version. Thanks, everyone, for your help! |

Gene, just checked my commercial Columbia vinyl 45 for "On The Turning Away" and the listed time is 4:43 (38-07660). I can't give you an actual time tho since I don't have a working turntable. |
