I've read that the long lost 45 of If I Had A Hammer is now out on the new Rhino collection. I listened to the snippet on amazon, and it does sound different from the version I've heard (the LP version) all these years. I thought I'd download the song (legally, from napster), but lo and behold, it's the LP version there. Why in h*ll they'd do that I've no idea. Anyone have the hardcopy CD yet can confirm it is indeed the 45 version?

Actually, the brand new Very Best of PPM collection on Rhino (which came out last week I believe) DOES have the 45 version of If I Had A Hammer. I bought this CD last weekend and can definitely confirm that it's the 45 version.
As you may be aware, the 45 version is a completely different recording than the LP version. IMO, this version blows away the LP version. The tempo is faster and there are some additional guitar fills to liven things up. Surprisingly, they even mixed it to stereo (the original 45 was mono, of course). The box set that was released on Rhino last year just had the original LP version, so this is the first appearance of the 45 version on CD. |

Talk about timing... I just picked up The Very Best of Peter Paul and Mary CD tonight mainly to get the 45 version of "If I Had a Hammer". Interestingly, there seems to be a disagreement here as to whether the 45 version is actually on this disc. My copy does say "single version" on the back insert and the catalog number on my CD case's spine is Rhino R2 73161. Could there be two different pressings? If it turns out the 45 version of "If I Had a Hammer" really isn't on this CD, then I'm going to promptly return my unopened copy to the store for a refund.
Is there any way I can tell for certain without having to open my copy to listen? |
