Admittedly only got to #70 on the Hot 100, but it went top 5 R&B and #1 Dance; does anybody have the original 7" (or radio promo, if it was different) of Prince's "Controversy?"
The label at Discogs says 3:39, but we all know how reliable labels are for timing. ;-) Also, I think it's just a (very!) early fade, but I wonder if the intro was chopped at all. As always... thanks for your help!!! |

I have it on the Hits/B Sides collection and it runs
3:35. And, it's available digitally. |

Yes, the Hits/B-Sides collection, to my knowledge, doesn't have any "new" edits. If a short version is on there, it's the correct single version.

Crud... I shoulda checked my copy of Hits / B Sides. For some reason I had the idea that version was album-length. Thanks, guys!
{EDIT} WELL, this was a much more interesting ride than I expected! I just finished editing down the album version to match the single edit on "Hits/B-Sides" and found they made SEVERAL chops (all of these edit points indicated on a file "in progress," not the total file): #1 - Cut from 0:08 to 0:16, on the 17th beat, removing the next 16 beats, taking you to a downbeat at 0:16. #2 - Cut from 2:24 to 4:09, removing 1:45 worth of "Our Father..." #3 - Cut from 2:40 to 4:25, removing 1:45 worth of "People call me rude..." #4 - Fade from 3:20 to 3:36, starting on the downbeat and ending right before the final cold note of the album version. It also appears to be .3% faster than the album version, but I don't know if that's LP vs. 45 or just different mastering on different machines. This, to me, is part of what is so much fun about this board: not only locating the original mixes / edits of the hits, but finding out exactly what and how producers and record labels chopped up the album cuts in preparation for consumption by "The Masses." ...Of course, the WHY some edits are made may ALWAYS remain a mystery. ;-) Hope this helps somebody; thanks again!!!
