Ed:
I personally have never come across a promo, commercial, or import CD single of Janet Jackson's "Where Are You Now". I don't think this song was ever officially released anywhere as a single.

I have been a Janet Jackson collector for some ten years and have yet to come across a "Where Are You Now" single release on any format.
Other than on the "Janet" album, I only remember its inclusion on the "Janet-Remixed" compilation in a remixed version by Nellee Hooper.

since i posted this we've gathered quite a few new members with editing expertise.....question is....has anyone tried to edit down the 5:45 lp version to a more radio friendly 3:30 to 4:15 range....

Ed:
I have been sick at home today and will probably take tomorrow off from work to recuperate. I'll use this time to put together a couple of different short edits of "Where Are You Now" for you and let you pick your favorite.

Does anyone remember hearing this on the radio? I do not.
It peaked at #30 on Hot 100 Airplay, spending a lengthy 37
weeks on the chart. It also reached No. 12 on Rhythmic Top
40, which I am guessing where it generated most of its
airplay. Does anyone that heard it remember if the full LP
version got the airplay or were in-house edits created? The
album version runs about 5:47, so I question if radio
played this full version.

Kiss-108 in Boston had it rotation for quite a while in
1993/4. You'd think they'd have done an edit, but can't
really recall.

Thanks for the info, cmmmbase. Yeah. I would think that, at
the very least, the song would be faded out early. The
intro could also use a cut.

This was on the charts right around the time I went from living in the Boston area to living in Southern California and I am sure I heard it at
some point in both markets but I don't remember it vividly.

I have a 4:31 edit. No idea where the source is. Since it was an airplay hit do I go with the LP version here. The edit can't possibly be the hit. If anyone can shed some light, not sure if I got the edit from you Ed...

Rich, the 4:31 edit in Ed's collection was a custom
creation done by a forum member sometime ago. This track
had a decent amount of airplay in Southern New England.
Kiss 108 made a custom edit from the full 5:46 version.
A little further south home in Providence the song was
spiked in, but my recollection was a cued up introduction
and early fade. No album edit was released officially
from Virgin on planet earth in 1993. Hope this helps!

It was actually me who created the custom 4:31 edit of Janet Jackson's "Where Are You Now" for Ed (I can't believe that was 17 years ago now... Where does the time go??). Thus, I can confirm that it is not an official radio edit (though I would certainly be honored if anyone were to ever program it on a radio station playlist. ;-) In the audio file running 4:31, I made only one edit to the album version at the 4:17 mark and faded out the ending early (I don't recall offhand by how much, though... How I wish now that I had documented all my custom edits with notes).
