I was reviewing 1998 and Whitburn's annual has this Top 10 track as a listed time of 4:11. I believe this to be incorrect.
The problem with going with Whitburn's time is that there are 2 promos (one a Maxi-Single of remixes) and one a regular promo that features the album version.
It is my understanding the remixes such as the Feet Beat Manifesto Mix Radio Edit were not really played on the radio. Even if they were the NOW release is the LP version. NOW releases of the time period are reflective of what got played on the radio as they targeted the hits of that time to the masses in one place. The remix disc versions, which I listened to are VERY unfamiliar.

To my knowledge the version played on radio was the album version. Considering that both are promos it seems odd that Whitburn chose this as the commercial version since both were promos.
Unless I am mistaken the whole reason for the popularity of this song is the album version and the 60s sounding vibe it gave off. This to my understanding is the version that was played for weeks, the version I heard and to this day the one I consider the hit.
Anyone have any knowledge confirming that the 4:06 on the promo CD was the hit and not the LP version? There is no cassette on discogs to reference.

It’s probably a typo. The non-described version on the 1-track promo is all we played in regular rotation. The remix got some airplay on Saturday night mix shows, but that was the only time I heard it on the air.

I don't recall where that (4:11) Pop Annual time came from, but it's clearly incorrect. This is one of my favorite songs from that year and I remember the album version getting the lion's share of the airplay at the time. In fact, I can't recall hearing those remixes at all!
Now, can we get an "official" time on the hit album version? It appears that (3:24) seems to be the most common time listed in the database. I want to get it correct in the RR database as well.

Thanks Paul. I have 3:25 as the running time. I'm glad you agree. I just was awfully confused where the 4:06 came from that's all. Usually I have no issues finding how Joel concluded what he did. But this one just didn't make any sense. Thanks!

The promo CD runs 3:26, which is also the printed run time.
