The poll only allows for 7 Poll Choices, so if your favorite decade is, say, 1950s or 1940s, please add your answer in the comments. I was speaking to one member of this group last week who said his favorite years were 1975-1984. So if you really can't commit to one calendar decade, you can answer with a 10-year period like that.

For people who participate in this poll, also please include your answer and Username in the comments. It's not just that I'm curious as to which decades get the most votes, but I'd like to know the favorite decade for each member who participates. I know many of you (though some only by Username) but not what's your favorite decade for music.

My favorite has always been the 70s. It's when I discovered music and AT40. I've always loved the variety of music that could be found in a single week's chart. To me, it's the last time that the business side of the music business looked for the next big thing, and not a bunch of things that sounded like the current big thing.

I find the 60's had the greatest amount of change in music. The 50's had the greatest change in fidelity. -Bill.

Couldn’t decide at first if I should chose 1960’s or 1970’s. After some thought I reminded myself that 1979-80 might be my favorite period of music, as there were so many different genres on the pop charts and beyond. Music seemed to be growing and expanding at that time. In my mind and to my ears, many classic songs were recorded and released during those years, especially in one of my favorite genres: power pop. So I went with the ‘70’s.

1950's for jazz
1963-1996 for soul
1970's for rock
1980's for pop
late 80's-early 90's for rap

For pop, the 1980s. For hip-hop, I agree with Autumn.

I'm torn between 80's and 90's for pop ('87 to '97) being my favorite years in Hip-Hop/Dance.

Gotta say the 80s....

I'll go with the 80s too, even though I'm on the older end of the boomer scale, and was in my 30s that decade.

I'd be one of those that would need to cite 1976 to 1986 as my favourite date range. I liked the mix of light rock, hard rock, pop, urban and dance tracks through that period.

The 80s was incredible (and well marketed!) but is beginning to be burned out.

I'm increasingly appreciating the 1990s (a chaotic chart and genre decade) due to nostalgia.

The early 2000s were the worst.

Oh I'd disagree. At the beginning, it seemed like a continuation of the late 90s, but as the decade moved on, I found that there was some REALLY great music in the 2000s, and it became its own.

For me, the 2000s was the first decade whereby FM radio was NOT the way I was exposed to new music. Instead, my Swedish friend Hannah got me following the Toplistann chart. I was exposed to more European and lesser known American acts (like Anastacia for example). I loved Evanesence, September, Junior Senior, Lily Allen, Sarah Barelleis, Daniel and Natasha Beddingfield, Coldplay, Shakira, Rufus Wainwright, ... so many.

I'm not voting in this poll because I simply couldn't choose between the 70s and 80s (like choosing a favorite child). My favorite 10-year period for music is 1975-84 (which is an even split). Starting with 1980, I find that each year I go forward and go backward, my interest gets to be a little less and less. That said, I can find great songs in ANY decade of music along with plenty of dreck.

1970s for me. Very diverse decade with Top40 playing Pop, Rock, Country, R&B... I also like the country genre from that decade (George Jones, Ronnie Milsap, Tammy Wynette, Statler Brothers). My all time favorite artist is Elvis and I actually prefer the material he was releasing in the 70s the best out of his career.

I generally lost interest in pop after 9/11. However the early 2000's continued with great remixes; Thunderpuss, Hex, Al B. Rich, etc. The clubs were still bangin' until 2005/06 then all remixes starting sounding the same, eventually incorporating a less dancy feel.

2012 had a renaissance in pop, but it didn't last long, IMO.

Bellenger1981 - 1980s overall. However, I am very fond of the 70s and 90s. Love the early 2000s, too.

I definitely agree that 2012 was a renaissance in pop. And yeah, it didn't last long.

First off, I'm semi-sort of new here. I had an account some years ago that I can no longer access.

This was a tough call for me, to choose the 1970s. Think about it. The 1960s had everything from a legend's last #1 record ("Hello, Dolly" by Louis Armstrong) to the rise of Motown. But I was born in 1966, was given my first transistor radio for a Christmas present in 1972 and got my first stereo system in 1979.

So, I grew up with the hits of the 1970s. I heard it all. Pop, rock, R&B, C&W, jazz, disco and more.

10 years ago I would have voted for the 1980s, as I was 9 years old in 1980 and music was everything in our family.

Despite that, I voted for the 1970s. There's just so much greatness, in almost every genre - R&B, pop, rock - and my appreciation for it only grows with time. I think of Gerry Rafferty's Baker Street - it's just so brilliant and unmistakably 70s. The arrangements, the crescendos, the vocal quality. If it would have been made post-1981 or so - would it have sounded the same? And would it have been a hit? Dunno.

Another factor in the 70s favor is that pop music kinda fell off circa 1986, whereas my perception is that the 70s were strong until the finish line for almost all genres.

If I could, I'd choose 1977-1986, or something similar. (Love the 1960s too, though. This is hard...)

1985-1995.
The 80s are way overrated in my ears. I love them, but can't ignore that the 90s were quite cool in so many aspects (especially for women in music, from Mariah to Alanis, etc).
Anyway, I can't ignore the 60s & 70s because of its wonders and how their artists and music inspired much of what I adore of the timeline I chose.

Here's the problem with the early 00s. (And by that I mean from 2001 - 2006 - After the Teen pop / Latin / post Grunge period of 97-00). It's not that the music was bad per se, but if you were a music enthusiast, following the charts and listening to the radio, this was a weird period.

Were there bangers? Absolutely, no question. But actively Radio pulled the plug on pop acts fast in 2001. Retail singles were essentially stopped. Billboard's charts were fueled solely by Airplay which was overwhelmed by post-high-point Hip/Hop at that time, leading to years of any other genre suffering commercially. Never before or since has one genre monopolized the top 20 for so long, leading to no real variety visibility (or marketing / promotion dollars) going to other acts.

I voted '80s, but it's probably closer to 1975-1985 for me. Every few years, the pop world has brilliant years (1967, 1972, 1979, 1983). I suppose my absolute favorite time frame is stuck right between two of these years, in 1979-1983.

Much of my sweet-spot soul (Stevie Wonder, Earth, Wind & Fire, Chic, etc.) is mid-to-late '70s.

Much of my melodic rock favorites (38 Special, Squeeze, Martin Briley, Saga, Pretenders) are early '80s.

Much of my *least* favorite pop also is early '80s (the endless Air Supply singles, "Endless Love", the somewhat anonymous songs that seemed to serve no other purpose than filling a spot on a playlist like "Say What" by Jesse Winchester, the Stars On 45 and the other medleys). To me, the innovation of 1982-1983 outweighs the doldrums of 1980-1982.

All just my opinions, of course. All time frames have good and bad, but the 1979-1983 good stuff provokes an emotional response in me that the other time frames don't.

I love all decades and keep current with the latest music since I'm a wedding & event DJ. But, my favorite decade in music will always be the 1970s. I was in radio in the mid 70s to the mid 90s and the 1970s takes me back to so many wonderful early memories in radio as well as the music I grew up with from the very early 70s.

My fave time period is 1964 - 1974, but of course there are always great tunes before and after. So I voted for the 60s...

It's a tie for me between the 1960s and the 1980s, but really it's 1964-1969 and 1980-1985. I would argue that both of those time periods had the most diverse charts we've ever seen. I voted 1960s.

Since it's been 5 days since the last post/vote, I'd say the poll is pretty much over. The 1980's came in first place with 49% of the vote; and the 1970s came in second place with 29% of the vote, followed by the 60's, then 90's.

I find it interesting (but maybe not surprising) that the 20's, 10's and 00's got a combined total of 0% of the vote. (This may explain, in part, why Record Research didn't print the weekly charts for the 2010's. I understand there's just less interest from the customer base for more recent decades.)

If this poll was conducted on this site in 2015 and 2005, I wonder how different the results would be. Maybe more votes for the 70's and 60's -as now there are probably newer and younger members of this site than there were 20, and even 10, years ago. :)

Was it the 60s or 80s that received 49%

I just realized I never voted. This is what happens when you get older!! For me it is 1964-1973. If I had to pick a decade it would be the 1960's.
