There’s a version of What About Me with an alternate mix. The same basic track, and lead vocals and length. But the drums come in much later, and when they do, the snares are louder. And the strings are more prominent. Do you know what CD I can find this alternate mix on? It’s not live. It’s not the version from the later album that’s a minute longer. And it’s not the 1989 re-issued single in the US. This has been a mystery for me for some time.  I hope someone knows the version I’m talking about and where I can find it on CD.

You stumbled upon the original Australian mix of the song.
It's on a superb 2-CD set called Australian Pop Of The 80s Vol. 1 Counting The Beat (2007, Sony BMG Music Entertainment 88697008782). There are six volumes in the series. They're great, but they're really uncommon outside of Australia.
I don't know where else the original Australian mix appears, as I'm not really an expert in what was released in Australia.

You're right! That's it. I always thought the version we had in the US was also the hit version in Australia. Maybe it's a difference of album vs. single version down under. If there are any folks from Australia here, maybe they can let us know.
