As I was re-filing "Show Me Love", I noticed 2 different promo CD singles on this. The first, ASCD-2437, has 3 tracks:

1-Single Edit (listed and actual 3:51)
2-Tee's Choice Mix (listed and actual 6:19)
3-12" Mix (listed and actual 5:12)

The second has no label, or no handwritten information on it. I took ASCD-2494 off the CD equivalent of the "deadwax." 1 track. We were told it was the "No Rap Edit." There is no listed time, but the actual time is (3:27). We switched over to this version the second we got it in, and continued to play this version for the duration, FYI.

Are you speaking of "Show Me Love" or the topic title "Rhythm Is A Dancer"?

The above info is for "Rhythm Is A Dancer", Pat. I did recently add a post to "Show Me Love", but within its own separate thread.

Is the single edit the version with the rap? I have not been able to find the rap version on CD anywhere.

On my TM Century disc, the "Single Edit" (as it's labeled) DOES have the rap. I've seen import singles list a 7" Edit; however, I don't know if this is the same as the "single edit."

the 7" edit does not have the rap.

Based on Jim's description, it sounds like his unlabeled promo CD copy of "Rhythm Is a Dancer" running 3:27 is the equivalent of the 7" edit (a.k.a. the "No Rap Edit") Aaron has seen on import singles. I'm pretty sure most mainstream Top 40 stations around the U.S. were playing this version.

I used to play "Rhythm Is a Dancer" when we were Top 40 in the mid '90s. The TM Century 'Golddisc' (issued after hits became recurrents) Had Track #1 as the '7" edit' (3:51-with rap) and Track #20 as the '7" rapless edit' (3:27)

I currently have in my collection of retired Hitdiscs the 7" version with the rap.

kodamar, you are correct, as I also have that TM disc in my collection. Track 1 is labeled as "single edit" on the GoldDisc, which, as chendagam notes above, is different from the 7" Edit.

Just to clarify, track one of the above promo CD single DOES have a rap, from 1:48 until 2:19. Perhaps Chendagam's post that the "7" edit" does NOT have the rap could be attributed to the fact that the label-less shorter version we received, and were told by Arista was the "no rap edit", might "officially" be shown as the "7" edit" on labelled copies. I believe the "7" edit" and the "no rap edit" to be the same version. It appears that the rap version IS on CD, both on my promo and Aaron's TM Century disc.

You are correct. I was going from memory, as all my station's TM discs have been retired to the locked closet since the hard drive started spinning... It was found that too many of them were growing legs after hours.

So as a DJ would you switch over because it's the lastest version sent to you or just because of preference?

During those years, we and many other Top 40 stations would almost always opt for a "no rap" version of big hit records. Not true anymore, but at the time there was still a perceived "discomfort" level among 35+ adult listeners, regarding raps. Chendagam, I can tell you're a big fan of the "with rap" versions. But with pro radio, it's always about ratings - nothing else. We didn't want the "Soccer Moms" to change the channel. As a result - we went with the no rap versions.

I believe this version is on Billboard Top Hits 1993, but double check before purchasing.

I made a mistake on this. The "7" Edit" does in fact have the rap in it. It appeared commercially on an import CD. The difference is that the intro is a bit longer and it has a cold ending with the "slamming doors" sound effect. On the version on my cassette single, the intro is shorter with a fade out. Actual run times are 3:43 on the 7" edit and 3:49 on the cassette. Does anyone have more infomation on this?

I agree. I was music director of a small-market CHR thru much of the 90s, and we were VERY cautious about anything too "urban sounding". In several cases, we made our own rapless edits of songs that either didn't come with one or we were unable to get serviced with. We'd often play the unedited version at night when it was mostly teens listening.

Is it possible to recreate the "Single Edit" using only the "7" Edit"? My local
radio station plays that version, and I would've just simply assumed it was a
custom edit they did to make it more "appealing" to listeners (rather than
accidentally getting hold of the US cassingle)…

Don't think so. The intros are noticeably different and not just editing differences. That's as far as I listened, so there might be other differences, too.
