Ed supplied me with two sources of Diana Ross' "So Close" to compare. Without a doubt, the database should have the note "LP version" next to the lone disc containing this hit.
Not only does the 45 run shorter at (3:50), but I noticed that it is a completely different vocal take. The CD version that Ed supplied was pulled from an import CD single, so I cannot say for sure that the LP version was a different vocal take from the 45. Perhaps the import single has a unique version? If anyone has the 45 and LP to compare, please post your findings. |

| Just to clarify, this import CD single does NOT contain the 45 version. As I stated earlier, it's a different vocal take and it runs (4:12) like the CD listed in the database. It very well may be the LP version; I just can't say for sure without having an actual copy of the LP version. |

edison......the cd single i have is from 1996.....it contains 4 tracks.....1-in the ones you love, 2-when you tell me that you love me, 3-endless love, 4-so close...........it is from the uk and it has the label & cat # of emi 7243-883548-20-cdem-457-lc-0542..........as with aaron, i don't have the version from the original cd "silk electric" so i can't compare the 2.....sorry guys.... ------------- edtop40 |

With the help of Ed and Aaron, I've now made the following conclusions about "So Close":
The version on the UK cd single is identical to the US CD version from Silk Electric (which I assume is that same as the US LP version. I can't imagine that they would have substituted that one track when running off the album master tapes for CD release.) The 45 version is definitely a different vocal take. But not all the way through. It seems like most of the vox are the same and some are different. I don't really know why they did this. It's not like the vocals are radically different or are any better or worse. Just like alternate vocal takes were chosen. The ad lib vox during the ending, though, are quite different. The track is not the same either. The 45 has some more instrumentation. In terms of sections being shortened (like intros or verses), I didn't detect anything like that. The difference in length (3:51 vs. 4:13) has to do with fading earlier rather than editing out sections. Obviously, you cannot get the 45 version from the CD, but if you faded the album version to 3:51, that's about as close as you can get, if you want this song in CD quality and not the full album length version. |

I'm resurrecting this thread because I just found a clean DJ promo 45 with a custom label.
The single is slightly remixed with the the addition of extra instrumentation of a different sax in places, a guitar parts of the chorus, and louder keyboards. There are extra background vocals, and Ross' vocals are different on the bridge. The mix is drier. I didn't time it, but it seems to be the same exact length as the LP version. The listed times for both the stereo and mono sides are 3:48, and the # is RCA JH-13424 The single was remixed by Richard Perry. ------------- |

my commercial 45 issued as rca 13424 states a run time on the label as 3:48 and does indeed run that length and is a remix of the full length 4:12 cd version......this 45 run time info s/b added to the db.....aaron...thanks again for the clean-up ------------- edtop40 |

| It's been 30 years since I heard this song on the radio, but for those who heard it back then (most likely on AC stations where it went #13), do you recall if it was the single mix or album mix that was played? I can't recall which I heard. The single mix sounds a little "foreign" to me now, but mostly because I've been listening to the album mix on CD for the past 25+ years (and the actual LP for even longer). I wish I could recall which was played on the radio. |

Our Top 40 station played "So Close" as an "extra", for just 3 weeks in
early 1983. We carted up/played the 45 version. It got no requests/sales, and, as I recall, the trade mag info for it wasn't overly impressive a month in, so we dropped it. It never even charted on our Top 30. Version-wise, I strongly suspect that 99.9%+ of the other Top 40 stations did the same. Gordon, your point about only hearing the album mix of a song in later years causes memories of exactly what version we heard as a current to fade ("Hit Me With Your Best Shot", or "Two Tickets To Paradise" are two high-profile examples of this) is quite valid. FYI, since the advent of the promo CD single in the late 80's, the only two times that I remember our station opting to play a version NOT included on the P CD S at all, and opting to play the full CD version instead, were Bell Biv DeVoe's "Do Me!" and PM Dawn's "Set Adrift On Memory Bliss". Since "Do Me" was the 2nd single from the "Poison" CD, after the title track hit big, we already had the full CD in-house. When we got word from MCA what the 2nd single was gonna be, we immediately played it in the music office, and liked it. But then, when the P CD S came in, none of us liked the single mix nearly as much as we had the LP version. But it is safe to say that if we hadn't happened to hear the LP version beforehand, we would've automatically just played "Do Me" off the P CD S. In PM Dawn's case, we also happened to get in the full CD before we got a P CD S in, so the "Do Me" scenario basically repeated itself in our music office. |

Funkytowngrooves is reissuing all of Diana's RCA albums with bonus tracks on Sept. 29th. According to the tracklisting, the So Close 45 mix will make its official debut on the expanded 2 disc Silk Electric set. |

You beat me to it! Yeah, every single mix, B-side, etc. will be included on these sets. I'm most excited that the remix single version of "Chain Reaction," which charted higher than the original album version single, will be making its CD debut.

Great news, indeed - I'll probably buy FTG's complete run of DR re-issues. But just to clarify, only 1984's Swept Away, 1985's Eaten Alive, and 1987's Red Hot Rhythm & Blues will be 2-CD sets (and thus, are priced accordingly) - the rest, including 1982's Silk Electric, are just single discs... |

| Yeah, I was so glad to hear about these discs a few days ago - each CD has so many bonus cuts. I just ordered all 6 Ross CDs today. The "80s: Diana Ross" CD I'm working on for Sony (which will have the single mix of "So Close") is still going through all the approval processes. So though I thought it would be the first CD release to contain the "So Close" single mix, this Funkytowngrooves CD of "Silk Electric" will now be the 1st, as it's coming out in 2 months. |

So Close single version on the the new Diana Ross "Silk
Electric" exapanded edition is listed at 3:55 on the case, times out 3:53 on the disc, but runs 3:48 like the commercial 45 as there are 5 seconds of silence tacked onto the end. |

Chain Reaction Special Mix aka the 2nd version that charted
at #66 in Billboard is listed as 4:20 on the CD case for the newly expanded "Eaten Alive" CD. Actual timing of CD is 4:22. The song however, runs the 4:18 the RCA commercial 45 does, it just contains 4 seconds of silence at the end.... |
