My 45 is actually the listed (3:58). But the "Title" of the song, on both my stock and promo 45s, shows as one long word, "Saturdaynight". Possibly to not attract the ire of the 4-years-earlier Bay City Rollers hit, or the 2-years earlier Earth, Wind & Fire hit "Saturday Nite". Your database currently has it as two words. One of the better songs currently not available on CD, IMHO.

Ed: What CD is it on? Is that "Herman Brood & The Wild Romance" LP on CD as an import, or is just the one song on an import V/A comp?

i found it on a german import cd titled "sphritz".....the song ran 4:16..........i had aaron or paul try and edit it down to match the commercial 45 and they reported back that it couldn't be done.........maybe i can be done by splicing in the missing parts....i don't know.....aaron, paul???

If I'm not mistaken, there are different lyrics in the 45.
I don't own either the LP or 45 so I'm no authority here!

According to the All Music Guide website (www.allmusic.com), the Herman Brood import CD My Way: The Hits (BMG 8843921) has two versions of "Saturdaynight" on it. One is listed with a 3:40 run time, while the other is described as the "Big Band Version" and shows a stated time of 2:26. The latter clearly doesn't appear to be the correct hit version, but what about the former? Thanks to Jim, we know the correct 45 run time is 3:58, but All Music doesn't always list CD run times accurately. So does anyone have the My Way: The Hits disc who can tell us if the track listed as running 3:40 is actually the correct hit version?

Thought I'd resurrect this thread since we never came to any conclusion as to whether the 45 version is on CD or not. Meanwhile, does anyone know which version of "Saturdaynight" is considered the LP version? Is that what's on the Shpritsz CD?

Todd, I'm certain that the 3:40 version on Shpritsz and My Way is the LP version. Just by listening to the online samples for both albums, I can tell that this isn't the sped up, remixed version on the 45.

I've been doing more research on the song and coming up with some hazy results, so here's my understanding thus far... The Shpritsz LP was originally released in 1978 in Holland, Herman Brood's home country. After Brood and his band experienced tremendous success there, he was signed to a record deal in the U.S. and released a self-titled LP in 1979 containing largely the same tracks as those on Shpritsz album, but were sequenced differently and, in some cases, the songs were remixed or re-recorded. This is why I was wondering whether "Saturdaynight" on the Shpritsz CD is the same as the LP version on the U.S. release. But if you're saying for certainty they are, Aaron, then I'll take your word for it.

I can send you a sample of the vinyl 45, so you can hear the difference. The pitch is quite drastic, increased by about 3 or 4%.

According to the All Music Guide website, "Saturdaynight" appears on a various artist import CD called http://www.allmusic.com/cg/amg.dll?p=amg&sql=10:fnfpxqqhldhe - On the Border of Pop with a reported run time of 4:01. I don't know if this is the 45 version, but I went ahead and ordered an inexpensive copy of this out-of-print CD. As soon as I get it, I'll report back with the results.

Well, my On the Border of Pop CD arrived today and I regret to report it does not contain the 45 version of "Saturdaynight". The version on my CD is remixed with a run time of 3:41 and plays much slower than the commercial 45. The lyrics are also different. The opening verses on my CD are:
The neon light of the "Open All Night"
Was just in time replaced by the magic appearance of a new day.
Meanwhile, the opening lyrics on the 45 are as follows:
Beautiful soul music churnin' out the jukebox.
Chicks dressed to kill.
So I take it, I must have the version that has appeared on other import CDs to date?

Todd, Ed sent me a dub of his import version for comparison a while back, and it also has those "neon light" opening lyrics. I'm pretty certain this the LP version, although I don't have the LP to check.
To clarify my post above, the versions on CD are presumed to be the LP version, given the much slower speed than the 45; however, it's also possible they could be "neither" since I don't have the LP to check for sure. When I listened to the vinyl LP quite a long time ago, I do recall that it was significantly slower than the 45, but I didn't compare the lyrics.

Jim, if your LP opens with the "neon light" lyrics, then it's a pretty safe bet that the CD versions are the LP version. I can check if you'd like, but you might be able to save some time and work, sir.

Hi all,
So, i never gave this song enough attention to chime in here, even tho i always liked it, and did indeed own the LP. I never heard the 45.
The LP version was all i knew.
I was getting rid of LP's and saving one-hitters to digital years ago, so alas i no longer have the album. And when i was saving the song, it seemed a bit long and repetitive to me, so i edited down to what i thought was a logical 45 edit. (my LP edit runs 3:48 vs. the albums' time which was a good 5 minutes, plus.
I looked up the album and some sites have it as 5:07, so i'll accept that, it was definitely over 5 minutes.
But, now i've heard the 45!
I can clarify a couple of things . . . the lyrics on the US album and the US 45 are not different. My LP opened with the lyric "Beautiful soul music churnin' out the jukebox. Chicks dressed to kill".
So i just got a really nice dub of the 45 from a friend, and same lyrics, actually the whole song is the same recording, but as indicated above, the 45 was sped up drastically ... to match my LP dub i had to pitch it up an entire semi-tone. I've never encountered a pitch change that drastic, because it makes the whole song and his voice sound different.
The LP tempo is sorta laid back...the 45 more hop-to.
The instrument tracks are all the same, just placed differently, 45 is total remix so NO chance of editing it from the U.S. LP version.
I'll also note that, on the U.S. LP, the part that i edited out that seemed unnecessary to me was a stretch of instrumental in the last chorus. The song has the same basic structure as the 45, but then the last chorus he does all those ad lib vocals. Well on the LP, after the last chorus starts, it breaks down to the backing instrumental there, and slowly builds back up and the same end chorus starts again, and i was hearing the same ad-libs again - so i assumed they "extended" it kinda like a 12" mix would.
Seemed logical to me to chop that out so i ended up with the slower pitch album mix that is edited similar to the 45. (there are other differences earlier in the song as well, tho, on the real 45 they moved a few "i just cant wait" sections around a bit too...)
So tonight i pitched my LP edit to match the 45, and it now times to 3:30.
(the 45 mix also has some audio at the end that is not in the LP mix because the LP had faded by then...)
So anyway i figured i'd clarify that the US album has no lyric difference, that must be an overseas thing...
And it seems the US 45 is not very likely to turn up on CD anytime soon, since apparently it was mixed specifically for the US Ariola release.
All i know is i dont know if i can get used to hearing the song sped up this much, after hearing the LP version for years.

Update folks:
Ok, so i happened to log onto one of my overseas sites for mp3's, and there is a Herman Brood collection (not sure what country of origin) called:
"1977 - 1997 20 Years Of Rock And Roll" and is a 2-disc set.
I DL'd the track simply called "Saturday Night" from disc one, and that runs 3:42, and is the slow LP pitch, and has the alternate "neon lights" lyrics. In fact, this is a different take of the song to the same backing track, but different mix.
But then on disc two, track#1 is called "Saturday Night (USA 12" Special Disco Mix") and the time said 3:54.
So, i DL'd it sure'nuff, in spite of that strange description, it is the US 45 version.
Only bummer tho, the end the file cuts off the last 3 secs of audio, hence its a few secs shorter than the 45, but i'll bet the actual CD of this album does not do that.
If anyone would like, PM me and i'll send the file so as to confirm it is indeed the US 45. It's a 256k mp3. The album info is in the id3 tag.

So, has anybody here purchased (or heard) the Herman Brood CD that is part of the "Essential" series, which CD is referenced by edtop40 three posts above this one?
Like Ed, I am also curious if the version of "Saturdaynight" that is Track 1 on that CD is the correct U.S. Single Version. Given that that Essential CD appears to be a European issue, my sense is that it is probably not the correct version even though the timing is pretty close. Before I purchased it, I thought I would re-visit this.

Sorry to hear the Herman Brood Essential CD doesn't have the 45 version of "Saturdaynight", Ed. It stinks to waste money on a disc that doesn't have what you're looking for, but we appreciate you "taking one for the team" and alerting us of your findings.

Is what was on the U.S. LP gettable anywhere on CD, even via import? I saw a YouTube video which appears to have the LP version (from vinyl) overlaid over some custom film footage from the uploader (has nothing to do with the song).
