pat

the db states that all cd version are the "lp version"....after listening to the cd version from "Ooh Yeah!" versus the 45 and i can report that the 45 version is identical to the cd version from "Ooh Yeah!"........also...the 45's picture sleeve states "album version" on the rear for the track.........this entry should be revised....

This is an interesting situation Ed as the dj 45 runs (4:37) not (4:44) as stated on the record label and apparently is not the same as the commercial 45 which you say runs (4:27).

Pat:

Does your DJ copy of "Downtown Life" simply run :10 longer than the 45 and LP, or is it a different version altogether?

The dj 45 edits the introduction of the LP (and apparently the commercial 45) out from :10 to :19. The ending on my dj 45 is :20 longer than the LP so it is a different version.

According to Abagon, his commercial 45 copy of Daryl Hall & John Oates' "Downtown Life" (AristaAS 1-9753) runs 4:25. (The matrix number printed on the runout grooves is: AS-1-9753-SB-SP-DMM 1-3). The database currently indicates that commercial copies were all 4:27, which happens to be the printed record label time on Abagon's copy. Is this another case where the database reflects the printed 45 time and not the actual time? I know we're talking about a mere :02 difference here, but the 4:25 time does fall a little more in line with all the song's CD appearances.

Does anybody know if the radio version ever made it to a CD other than (I assume) the promo CD released to radio?

Is the http://youtu.be/lAcPabV0RuU - video of Downtown Life the same mix as the DJ 45, despite the fact that it runs a few seconds shorter?

Or... is the video the same as the Urban Mix (listed time 4:33) that appears as the B side on various international 45s and CD singles for this song?

And has anyone ever found any of these versions on any (readily available) CDs? It seems that NightAire was wondering the same thing 3 years ago...

I'm curious as well.

The Urban Mix is included on YouTube
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=D8U9WZwNFwA - https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=D8U9WZwNFwA
and runs closer to 4:34, but you can't always rely on
YouTube.

From what I recall, the Urban Mix has always been the soundtrack to the video, back to its airings on VH1. By the way, there’s a recent digital EP release of the “Downtown Life” mixes including the Downtown Radio Remix and the Urban Mix (the DJ 45 edit of the LP version is not included). Tried to post a link to the Qobuz US store where I purchased it, but the link is not displaying correctly. It’s available there, iTunes, Amazon, etc.

If i counted them all, there are 10 different versions of Downtown Life:

-Album/Single version (4:28)
-US promo single version (4:45)
-Downtown Remix (7:31)
-Baccapella (5:06)
-Downtown Radio Remix (4:25)
-Dubtown Life (5:57)
-Urban Mix (4:36)
-Bryan ''Chuck'' New Remix (3:57)
-Downtown Remix Edit (6:28)
-Dubtown Life Edit (5:15)

The last 2 entries are from the same Germany cd single that includes the Bryan ''Chuck'' New Remix.
