A question regarding this beloved slice of pop/funk...
I know there are two mixes of this track.
One is fairly common (the US 45 version, I believe) and turns up on Pure Funk 2, Number Ones: Soul On Fire (Simitar Records, 1998), and Now 1982 (Virgin/EMI UK, 1999). There is also a 12" version of this mix that turns up on Phat Trax 4 and a Junior CD from Mercury.
The other is quite uncommon, and I've only seen it on an obscure box set called "100 Dance Hits Of The Eighties" (Connoisseur Collection 101, 1990), where it's probably taken from vinyl. The mix packs a lot more oomph than the common mix, and is about ten seconds shorter.
Dave Marsh mentions both mixes in the book "The Heart Of Rock & Soul", and ranks the "American Remix" as the 927th greatest single ever made. He notes that the British version of the record was fairly flat-sounding, and I assume that's the US 45 version. He also notes that Tee Scott remixed it for the US release (later released in the UK) by "brightening the top and fattening the bottom", and I assume that's the uncommon version noted above.
Can anyone confirm this? Does anyone know which mix was the actual hit in the UK (and it was a BIG hit there in 1982)? Finally, does anyone know where I could find a cleaner copy of the Tee Scott remix on CD?

The U.S. vinyl and CDs are are all the same mix, but the single is a shorter edit. The 12" version is the exact same as the U.S. LP.
The U.S. version is brash and has that British sound.
