I know this was only a #58 Billboard hit, but I'm wondering which version is the official single version for Rob Base & DJ E-Z Rock's "Joy And Pain." I have an import CD single that contains the "Radio Version" (4:07) and "World 2 World Remix" (6:05), which also appeared on the 12" single. (The "Radio Version" is an edit of the "World 2 World Remix.")

My original 45 of "Joy And Pain" (Profile 5247) is listed simply as a
remix, with a listed time of 3:58 but an actual time of 4:06. The
version on Millennium Hip-Hop Party (Rhino 79824) is 3:44,
and is different from the 45 in that it edits out part of the bridge and
has a longer fadeout. The 45 remix is listed as being by William
Hamilton, Rob Base, and Gail "Sky" King.

Thanks a million, Paul! It sounds like the "Radio Version" from the import CD single is also the 45 version. The version on Millennium Hip Hop Party is the LP version.

By chance, do you also happen to own the 45 for their second single "Get On The Dance Floor" (released as the follow up to "It Takes Two")? The LP version for this one runs about 4:23 while the Sky King Remix on the 12" is more than 6:00 long. I can't imagine they used the full remix for the 45, but I haven't been able to find a US 45 copy to see if it's the LP or an edit of the remix.

"Joy And Pain" was apparently the 1st Promo CD Single put out by Profile (PCD-PR01). It is a "Promo 2-fer", which several labels did around '88-'89. It includes 3 versions of Judy Torres' "Love Story" as cuts 3, 4 & 5. "Joy And Pain" occupies the first 2 tracks, with Cut 1--Single Version (Remix) listed at (3:58), but is actually (4:05). Cut 2--12-Inch Version (World To World Remix) is a listed & actual (6:06).

Good info, Jim! Wow, that's a rarity. I've never seen that single in all my years of hip-hop promo CD searching.

After Jim posted info on his promo CD, it has become one of my most sought after discs. I was just able to hear a copy of it today, and Profile Records screwed up big time when they put out their very first promo CD!

The "Single Version (Remix)" on the promo CD is actually the "No-Rap-Attack-Dub-Track" found on my import CD. There are practically no lyrics in this version at all! It's mostly instrumental, except for a few sung ad libs here and there.

Unless there was more than one pressing (perhaps an "RE-1" issue), it appears that any airplay (probably on R&B stations) would've come from the vinyl 7", the full-length album, or the full 6:00 12" version from the promo CD. I highly doubt any stations played the dub version, even though it was accidentally labeled as "Single Version" on the CD.

The 4:05 "World To World Remix" edit is on a UK compilation CD according to Discogs. It's called Deep Heat 3 The Third Degree.

My stock 45 has the remix and it sounds like what you're describing here.

Good to know that it's available on a compilation, John. It's also available on the US compilation Mr. Magic's Rap Attack Vol. 5 (and Rapmasters Vol. 15, which is essentially the exact same as the Mr. Magic comp. but on Priority Records).

Even today when I hear the song on the air, it's always the album version.

Think I've also seen the remix on a UK CD single. Depends on how much of the other music on a compilation you want or need.

Even TM Century issued the LP version on a collection I have from the mid-1990's.

oooops, no - but it has a slightly louder bass line from my memory than the LP did. I didn't remember reading about an instrumental version here, but maybe I missed something, or skipped a post...lol.

Oh I see - the "dub" version. Now I'm up to speed.

Well, apparently there are two promo CD singles of "Joy And Pain," because I have one in my possession that has the catalog number "PCD-PRO1re." It has the same track listing, but the first cut has the true single version instead of the dub version. Mystery solved!
