I recently dug up my old 45 of "Hair" and slapped it on the turntable to give a listen... now granted, it is in pretty bad shape, but even after a dozen or so listenings, i had trouble discerning any difference between the mono 45 version and the stereo album version... can anyone help me out on this??? also, is the 45 version on any cd???

| Welcome, jrjr. The only difference between the 45 and all CD appearances of "Hair" is in the "psychedelic" last note ending - they are different. And no, the 45 ending is currently not featured on any CD release of it. |

hi guys,
please correct me if I am wrong, but the 45 of Hair I am aware of is missing the wind overdubs found on the stereo version (I am not able to listen to it at the moment so not sure at what time it starts, but I believe it's the second verse..."I let it fly in the breeze and get caught in the trees Give a home for the fleas in my hair"). The mix sounds quite different to me also. Jim, check it out on "the CD"! ------------- dc1 |

The 45 is missing the wind overdubs (i think they start on the word "trees") and the ending is different, as well as the mix being very different (also sounds like some of the vocals on the stereo mix had different effects done to them than the mono versions). ------------- Live in stereo. |

| David/Tom: Very glad jrjr brought up this topic. I had already had two folks with "trusted ears" previously analyze "Hair", and that was their report back to me - it's certainly possible they goofed. I was, as we speak, working on an "upgraded custom edit" with Aaron. Instead, I will now take a step back, shoot out an original 45 dub to Aaron, and see if he hears what you two do. Thanks very much for the new info, guys! |

| I just listened to Jim's dub, and there's no doubt a difference with some of the reverb on both the vocals and instrumentation, although very slight. Also, there's definitely wind sound effects, as David and Tom have pointed out, on the stereo LP version. |

| thanks to all for your replies... i listened to my 45 more closely, and there indeed is no wind effect after "trees" (although a lot of snap crackle and pop)... less reverb on lead vocal, too, to these ears... |

Ed, as David mentioned upthread, the wind sound effects on the stereo mix are in the second verse: I let it fly in the breeze and get caught in the trees Give a home for the fleas in my hair The wind blows in after the word "breeze" at about the 1:34 mark, builds into a full gale, then finally dies down at 1:41. The first time I ever heard the stereo mix of "Hair" was in the '70s, on one of WMID/Atlantic City's Post Records compilation LPs. My first impression: "what's with the howling wind?" Having only ever heard the mono 45, it sounded completely ridiculous to me, but must have made a lasting impression, nonetheless: When Art Garfunkel's "Bright Eyes" single was current in 1979, I could never resist the temptation to bury the line "there's a high wind in the trees, a cold sound in the air" under hurricane-like wind sound effects. My very belated apologies to any listeners who might have been disappointed that Hurricane Art was not on their 45s. ;) bwolfe: The stereo and mono intros are the same length. |

The mono single version of "Hair" is on the 2021 remastered
version of Eric's "Hard To Find 45s On CD, Volume 17, Late Sixties Classics." It replaced "The Pied Piper" by Chrispian St. Peters. It is not listed in the database. I purchased a group of CDs from Eric during their Christmas sale and was quite surprised to find this!!! |

If you go to the Eric site it now lists "I Live For The
Sun" as track 11. So if you are looking for Hair there are now at least 3 versions of Vol 17. |

There are only two versions of this Eric Records CD release (volume 17). The remastered version with the mono version of "Hair" is the version now being sold on that site. "Hair" is track 5.
"I Live For The Sun" appears on both the original CD release as well as the current remastered version. The song dropped from the remastered version was "The Pied Piper" as pointed out above. ------------- Santi Paradoa Miami, Florida |
