Does anyone have a stereo version of Sami Jo's "Tell Me A Lie"?

Is it on any import CD?

Was the commercial or promo 45 stereo?

Did she have an album?

It really is a great performance & a fine composition (Janie Fricke took the song to #1 Country years later).

The commercial 45 was mono. MGM seems to have stuck to mono for their 45s longer than most other labels.

Thanks for communicating Paul.

I thought it was funny that the vinyl dubs floating around on the 'net were mono!

Does anyone out there have an LP or promo 45 to check?

hey andrew... this is a hard one to find considering it
was a big country hit and a moderate pop hit (#22)
which probably got more regional airplay than
national airplay (well at least here in central NY in
'74)... since most MGM artists got scattered to
various re-issue labels, i wonder where "tell me a
lie" is, because i have searched and the only thing i
have found is old vinyl LP's on MGM South...

Does anyone out here actually own the vinyl LP?

Is it stereo?

Both my commercial and promo 45s for this (both mono) have a listed time of (2:59), but an actual time of (3:22). My LP, stereo like Pat's, has a listed time of (3:27) and an actual time of (3:26). I wonder if MGM South simply sped the 45 up, possibly accounting for the :04 second time difference between the 45 and the LP?

Jim, your suspicions are correct, for the most part, about the difference between the stereo LP and mono 45 versions. I just did an A/B comparision, and they stay together perfectly once you match the pitch of the LP version with the 45.

There is one exception that I found, and it is at the end of the first chorus. On the word "tomorrow" in the line "you'll be long gone tomorrow," there was a drum beat that was slightly ahead on one of the versions. When I played them separately at this point, I noticed that there are a few acoustic guitar strums on the 45 that are not present in the stereo LP mix. Other than those few strums, everything else sounds the same to me. The 45 also starts fading earlier and has a nice smooth fade out. The LP sounds truncated at the end.

Since this thread was started, has anyone been able to find "Tell Me a Lie" on CD anywhere? It's one of the few remaining Top 40 songs from the '70s I'm missing on disc.
