There are promo CDs in Discogs that list a run time of the 7" mix as (3:14), but the only copy I have runs
(4:04). Is there an actual (3:14) version out there?

This is for the vinyl junkies out there... My 45RPM single Pendulum/Elektra 7-64674 (7" Mix)
says its 4:05 and runs exactly 4:04.8, so close enuf. I assume it's the censored version, I
didn't hear any bad words. The label doesn't say anything about any edits. It wasn't released
on vinyl until 3/12/93, which means it had already peaked on the Hot 100. -Bill.

As I remember, the tell is just before the first chorus when
"Miles and shit" is re-rapped as "Miles my man".

I vaguely recall my 7" being uncensored, though I might be
confusing it with the 12" -- both are in my parents'
basement 3000 miles away, unfortunately, so I can't help
more.

Difficult to answer, for me. I did find a picture of a 45 label being the 7" Mix, But it says 4:05 on that. (And doesn't say promo)

I also looked at good 'ol TM Century. Their versions run 3:58.

FWIW, on the European CD single, the 7" Mix says and runs 4:05, and has the "Miles my man" lyric. The album mix on that same disc says and runs 4:22, and has "Miles and shit".

A 3:14 version, if it exists, could be the meat of the 7" mix, starting from where the horn samples start at 0:29, and ending with the "we out" at 3:43.

My commercial Maxi-CD single labeled as Elektra EKR 159 CD is
listed as 3:14 in Discogs but really runs 4:05. The TM
Century copy I have runs 4:03.

Discogs shows a version of EKR 159 as "US Maxi-Single," but I don't believe this was ever released in the US on CD single. If that's the case for your copy, John, maybe you can update the country on the Discogs page to the correct one. I have the German copy of this CD, which is not the one with the incorrect printed time. In any case, the catalog number is not one that would've been used by Elektra for US releases.

Good eye, Aaron! My copy is also the German CD single with
the correct printed time of 4:05.

OK, so are we back to Square 1? Or is there a listed/actual (3:14) edit out there?

I have nominated the dubious "US" retail CD with cat# EKR 159 CD to be merged with the "UK" one, so that problem should be resolved soon.

The https://www.discogs.com/release/1274990-Digable-Planets-Rebirth-Of-Slick-Cool-Like-Dat - US promo CD (PRCD 8643-2) entry in Discogs still says 3:14 for the 7" mix. I've left a comment asking for someone to verify its duration. https://gnudb.org/cd/fo1b031403 - What appears to be this disc in gnudb/freedb/cddb suggests it does indeed have the 4:05 version, so the duration will probably be corrected soon. (Really, I guess I could just correct it based on the info in this discussion, but I like to give first crack at it to people who have it in hand.)

As for the UK/European discs, there are two of them in Discogs. One says "Made in Germany" and credits Warner Music Manufacturing Europe on the J-card flap, and the other does not have that text. We need someone to submit a scan or photo of the inside of the latter copy's insert, as well as images of the discs for both releases.

I have the US promo CD, and I just updated the run times on Discogs for PRCD-8643-2. I believe those times were copied to the listing in error 14 years ago.

I'll pull my import CD in a moment and scan it.

I was wrong! I just heard the 45 for the first time in, ahem, 29 years. Bill
was correct that the 7” is clean.
